CABE and Partners Awarded State EWIG Grants on EL Roadmap...
Californians Together (CALTOG) and the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) are proud to launch two complementary $5M Educator Workforce Incentive Grants awarded by the California Department of Education . Both grants are designated to support implementation of the visionary and comprehensive California English Learner Roadmap Policy.

In recognition of the need to build capacity throughout the state in order to implement the recent comprehensive CA English Learner Roadmap policy, the California legislature earmarked $10 million in Educator Workforce Incentive Grants that were awarded by the California Department of Education in March 2020 just before COVID-19 became a grim reality for our state.

The result is a pivotal moment for English Learner/Dual Language Learner education in California— a moment of elevated needs resulting from lost schooling and access for English learners due to COVID-19, an urgent crossroads for groundbreaking English learner policy in a state lacking capacity to implement, and an opportunity to bring resources and research-based responses into the hands of educators as tools to address both the educational harms resulting from the pandemic and to simultaneously pursue a vision of powerful dual language schooling for our state.

CABE’s Multilingual California Project,  is an effort of the Multilingual California Alliance involving five County Offices of Education ( San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, Fresno and Butte ) and San Diego State University, along with at least 20 statewide LEAs. An Advisory Council comprised of renowned experts in the field of Biliteracy and English Learners will collaborate and support this effort.

Californians Together’s EL RISE!  (English Learner Roadmap Implementation for Systemic Excellence!) is a collaboration with Sobrato Early Academic Language (SEAL) and Loyola Marymount University’s Center for Equity for English Learners (CEEL), the National Resource Center for Asian Languages , and 20 County Offices of Education.

Together, these sister grants will reach educators throughout the state, engaging counties serving 94% of the English Learners in California schools.

Extended Deadline for School Districts to Submit Applications...
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT INITITATIVE (CEI)
REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS DEADLINE IS
EXTENDED TO SEPTEMBER 28, 2020

The Community Engagement Initiative (CEI) is a state-wide effort intended to strengthen the System of Support by building the capacity of school districts to authentically engage one another. The California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE), the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS), the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE), and Families In Schools (FIS) invite any interested school district in California to submit an application to serve in the Community Engagement Initiative’s Cohort II Peer Leading and Learning Network (PLLN).

This Network (Cohort II) will join Cohort I districts in leading the CEI’s efforts to build statewide capacity for authentic community engagement, with a focus on improving outcomes for all students, particularly English Learners, low-income students, foster youth, and students from other underserved groups.

As districts have spent the past months focused on supporting and planning for the immediate needs of students, educators, and families in their communities during these unprecedented times, the submission deadline for the CEI: PLLN Cohort II has been extended to September 28, 2020 . —Poema de Alma Flor Ada en

Escucha a Alma Flor leyendo en voz alta su poema, Bilingüe:
Bilingüe

Porque hablo español,
puedo oír los cuentos de mi abuelita
y decir familia, madre, amor.

Porque hablo inglés,
puedo aprender de mi maestra
y decir I love school.

Porque soy bilingüe,
puedo leer libros y books,
tengo amigos y friends,
disfruto canciones y songs,
juegos y games,

What does being bilingual mean to you? We invite you to write a poem, story, or article, or to create a work of art in response to this question. Then submit it by August 3, 2020 to Multilingual Educator for possible publication.
