Message from the President . . . . .

Greetings,
I was looking at the CVOA June Newsletters from 2020 and 2021 to get some inspiration for what I should write for this spot. And what did I find? The “maybe we’ll open up” gloom of COVID. This year we finally advanced beyond our burrows. Be sure to check out the events planned for the coming months and especially look at the 2023 ski trips and the specific instructions for making a reservation.
How do you find out what is going on? Besides our newsletters, the CVOA web presence is the best way to explore activities. Our crew of volunteer members do a great job of keeping content current while providing access to our archives. We have four primary ways of reaching out to our members. One is the general website, another is a website specifically for the Range at https://www.cvoarange.com/ , the third is on Facebook and the fourth is our newsletter, like this one, that is sent out by email each month. In fact, CVOA’s back-office operations are pretty impressive for a volunteer organization. We maintain a membership database on Microsoft Access and use Constant Contact to reach out to our members. Most of our finances are kept on MS Excel and our website is built on WIX.
Some foggy summer afternoon take a stroll on the web and check out our website at https://www.cvoutdoors.com/ . If you’re interested in becoming part of the team that makes all of this possible, please let me know. By having more members involved with and contributing to producing content and designing our communications, we refresh our creativity and the “look and feel” that make products more appealing and useful.
Please join your fellow members at the upcoming Board/Member meeting. The details are in this Newsletter.
I hope everyone is enjoying spring as we move from winter to summer activities. Stay healthy and continue to enjoy our great outdoors.
Thom

Recreation, Lunch, Board & Member Meeting
Sunday, June 26 in Belgrade
All CVOA members are welcome to attend. Val and Sam Hudspath have generously offered to be our hosts.
There are many opportunities for activities in the Belgrade Lakes area. Plan to meet at their home around 10 am, and engage in whatever adventure you wish. Activities could include:
- Paddling – The lawn at the Hudspath’s is flat with a sandy beach from which you can launch canoes or kayaks. They have 3 single kayaks and 1 tandem kayak (or you can bring your own). You can paddle Great Pond and its islands or paddle to the Post Office in Belgrade Lakes, pull up and enjoy a walk around town.
- Motor boating – You can launch your own craft from a nearby public boat launch. The Hudspaths also have a pontoon boat.
- Biking – Rt. 27 has a wide shoulder in the area and many locals bike on it.
- Hiking – There are some easy to moderate trails in the area. Check out www.7lakesalliance.org for descriptions of hikes and maps. Click on “Land” at the top menu bar, then "Trail System." The hikes are 2-6 miles away from the Hudspath’s house.
Lunch at 1pm – CVOA will provide foods for the grill, burgers and more. Please plan to bring sides and/or desserts. Please bring your own beverages.
Please contact Val at pvsam1@twc.com to let her know if you are coming for lunch, so we can plan for the appropriate amount of food, and in what morning activity you might be participating.
Board/Member meeting at 2 pm. We hope you will stay for the meeting.
Hope you can join us!!
Val and Sam

CVOA Ski Trip Policies
Policy for Filling Space on Ski Trips
- The postmark dates of the mailed forms will determine the date of receipt. Priority for filling spaces will be based on date of receipt, on a daily basis.
- Reservations with a postmark prior to the reservation mailing date will not be accepted.
- If on any day at any time in the process there are more reservations received than there are spaces, a blind drawing will be held to determine priority for the available spaces, and priority for the remainder on a subsequent waiting list.
- For the first three days of receipt of reservation forms, tenured members, those who were paid members 60 days or more before the initial reservation date, have priority over newer members.
Ski Trip Reservation Fees
- Each CVOA trip requires a non-refundable fee of $50.
- The $50 fee is mailed with your CVOA trip reservation form.
- These monies are used for trip expenses such as bus driver gratuities, trip parties and other expenses at the discretion of the trip leader.
- The $50 fee is refundable only if there is no space available for you or the trip is cancelled.

A Huge Thank You
to all who helped with the Range Clean Up! It was a very successful day with 30 folks volunteering their time. We then had a BBQ with extra goodies donated from club members. Thank you Harvey Packard for donating a CVOA fleece vest for a give-away which went to Chris Paradis. Congrats to Chris. And everyone got a CVOA lanyard as a small thank you.

Apologies for anyone I may have missed
In other Range News
We had our first 5 Stand and Trap Shoots of the season which were well attended. We had first time shooters on the Trap Field who were excited to try a new sport! We hold 5 Stand Shoots, which are open to Members, Guests, and the Public, every Saturday from 9am to noon. (rain or shine) Trap every Sunday from 9am to noon. (weather permitting) The cost is only $6 per 25 shots which hel cover the cost of the clays. If you are new to the sport, no worries, a Range Safety Officer will lead you through a round to insure your safety and understanding of the shoot.
Keith MacDonald, a Level II NSCA Instructor will be offering a 5 Stand Training Course on Friday, June 17th from 10am to 2pm. Keith has been an instructor for LL Bean and comes highly recommended by several of our most experienced members. The cost is $60/person and there are 5 spots available. If there is severe weather, there will be a rain date of June 24th. This is a golden opportunity to learn 5 Stand or improve your skills! If you are interested, contact Diane Stone at dpstone32@gmail.com.
Welcome David Hatch to our Range Committee. We are in very great need of more folks willing to put in a little time to help steer the future of the Range. If you have any ideas you'd like to see implemented at the Range, your input is sought. Please contact Diane Stone at dpstone32@gmail.com. If you'd like to speak to me directly, you can contact me at 207-240-4752 or 207-235-3697.
Also, we are looking for someone to take on the task or general maintenance. The pay is $20/hr and the person taking on the responsibility has flexibility in making their own schedule. Tasks include mowing (yes, we have a riding lawn mower), some weed whacking, cleaning of the bathroom, clubhouse, and 5 Stand building, and replacing of the targets on the Rifle and Pistol Ranges as needed. If interested, please contact Diane Stone at dpstone32@gmail.com.

Annual Route 27 Road Cleanup

Thank you Volunteers for the May 9th-14th
Carrabassett Town Clean Up
For Route 27
Thank you for helping us keep the scenic highway litter-free for Carrabassett Valley. It is nice to continue the tradition of annual litter patrol. There were over 60 volunteers that helped with this project throughout the week. Many bags of trash were collected and taken to the Transfer Station.
There are many people that were involved in this clean up and each contributed in keeping this special place, Carrabassett Valley, looking natural and scenic to those passing through. Your efforts did not go unnoticed.
Thank you for your time and community involvement and willingness to volunteer.
Al Sleight
