From the Desk of the Executive Director

Last week from May 23-25, Marley Henneigh and I had the pleasure of attending the 81st annual Alberta Chambers of Commerce Annual General Meeting and Policy Session in Camrose. The Camrose & District Chamber of Commerce were wonderful hosts for the event.

On Friday morning, we had the pleasure of hearing from Ginny Flood, chair of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce about their Vote Prosperity campaign , which will be rolled out in advance of the fall federal election. Vivian Krause , Vancouver-based researcher and writer, shared her findings regarding foreign funding again Canada’s energy sector. Then on Friday afternoon, we enjoyed touring Camrose County. Our stops included Vermeers Dairy , Cargill Canola Crush Plant , Camrose County Conservation Area and HTKA Brighton Cares site. The community tours during this annual conference are always a highlight and a great opportunity to learn.

The conference concluded on Saturday with the AGM and Policy Session, followed by the Chair’s Dinner. President, Jeff Hall and Director, Barry Fullerton joined us for Saturday’s meetings. Twenty-seven policy resolutions were considered by Chamber of Commerce delegates from across the province. All resolutions were timely and of significance to the business community. There was much lively debate on topics such as the carbon tax, excise taxes on medical cannabis, the Canada-Alberta Job Grant , limits for small claims court and Alberta’s drug and alcohol public policy. All of the policies approved by members of the Alberta Chambers of Commerce will now form the foundation of the Alberta Chambers advocacy efforts for the coming year.

On a related note, the Alberta Chambers of Commerce is currently seeking feedback from the business community regarding important issues facing our province. These issues include fiscal and business competitiveness, reducing the regulatory burden on business and opportunities for economic diversification. As such, the Alberta Chambers has created a short survey to garner the priorities of the business community. Your participation in this survey would be greatly appreciated and should only take approximately 10 minutes of your time. The survey will remain open until June 14 to complete.

Respectfully submitted,

Heather Bitz
Executive Director
