Quote of the Month:
"This program was wonderful because it facilitated us to share experiences from each country about the increasing interest of students, especially women in the field of STEM. In the future we can establish cooperation in accordance with the needs of each country. Thank you so much to the U.S. Embassy and IVCLA because the program was very helpful and inspired me, and everything provided was the best.”

Event Recap: Citizen Diplomacy Celebration
On June 6th, IVCLA hosted its annual Citizen Diplomacy Celebration at the beautiful Japanese American National Museum in downtown Los Angeles. We were honored to recognize the Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment as our 2019 Outstanding Resource and Norman Arikawa, Assistant Director of Trade Development at the Port of Los Angeles, as our 2019 Outstanding Citizen Diplomat. We would like to extend a special thank you to our event sponsors who helped make the evening possible and all of the restaurants, businesses, organizations and individuals that donated to our silent auction and Year of International Dining drawing. Your support allows IVCLA to continue increasing global understanding and cooperation!

June 20th is World Refugee Day!
Organized by the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR), World Refugee Day began in 2001 to raise awareness for refugee issues and recognize the strength and perseverance of refugees around the world. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has proposed proclaiming June 20th as "World Refugee Day" in Los Angeles and the month of June as "Refugee Awareness Month" to recognize the significant contributions of refugees and the work of refugee service organizations in L.A. County.
Countering Radicalization through International Exchanges
IVCLA frequently arranges programs for international visitors on topics relating to countering radicalization and extremism. We work closely with the University of Southern California and homeland security expert, Dr. Erroll Southers to facilitate global dialogue on these issues. Many of these discussions have led to continued international cooperation and collaboration.

USC Center on Public Diplomacy recently published French and U.S. Communities Work Together to Counter Terrorist Radicalization, an article written by Michael Duffin originally for DipNote, the official blog of the U.S. Department of State. The article highlights some of the initiatives that have resulted from international exchanges, including the International Visitor Leadership Program, to counter terrorist radicalization.
