Storytelling plays an important role in each of our lives. It's how we share information and expertise, how we educate each other, and how we understand the human experience.
At last month's Citizen Diplomacy Celebration, we saw the power of storytelling at work, through the camera, on the dance floor, in paintings and through people-to-people exchanges. Evelyn Seubert, Co-Founder of
Teen International Media Exchange
, President of
International Youth Media Summit
, and IVCLA's 2018 Outstanding Citizen Diplomat, told the story of her film students. Through film, many of her students find a lifeline to hope, a chance to share their own stories and a tool to address critical social issues. Dr. Erroll Southers, Director of the
Safe Communities Institute
, Director of Homegrown Violent Extremism Studies in the
USC Sol Price School of Public Policy,
and IVCLA's 2018 Outstanding Resource, shared the story of how dialogue with international visitors helped him implement international projects addressing homegrown extremism. Through these stories, Evelyn and Erroll learned that their work has a lot in common. We look forward to seeing their collaboration unfold.
World-famous dancer, Boogie Frantick, told his story through a captivating dance performance. He used dance as a means to express his creativity and channel his energy in a positive way while he was growing up. Now, Frantick uses dance to give back to his community, through his work with the
GR818ERS
, a grassroots organization dedicated to improving racial and cultural tensions and empowering youth through Hip Hop culture.

Through dialogue, art, dance, film and more, storytelling is the foundation of IVCLA's work. The more stories we tell, the more bridges of understanding we build, making our world a more peaceful place. Thank you Citizen Diplomats for sharing your stories last month!

Remembering Two Beloved IVCLA Members
|
|
The world lost two wonderful human beings with the passing of beloved, long-time IVCLA members, Richard "Dick" Dommes and Mrs. Kuljit Marwah. Both were kind, personable and empathetic people who lived long, full lives while giving back to their communities and spreading joy throughout the world.
|
|
Richard "Dick" Dommes, 1919 - 2018
|
|
Until he "retired" in 2010, Richard "Dick" Dommes was the friendly voice calling IVCLA members every Wednesday to offer the opportunity for home hospitality with interesting international visitors. He was a wonderful person who exuded kindness and respect for other people. As a consistent IVCLA volunteer for more than 25 years, Dick brought smiles to the faces of all who knew him. His passion for learning about cultures and people from every corner of the world and his curiosity about global issues were contagious. He believed in the importance of education for all and was an active volunteer at the Burbank Public Library. Dick passed away peacefully at Windsor Retirement Community in Glendale on May 30th at the age of 99. His family is planning a memorial service in January.

|
Mrs. Amarjit Marwah, 1929 - 2018
|
|
Mrs. Kuljit Marwah always had a smile on her face as she welcomed IVCLA guests to her Malibu home for our annual Fulbright Luncheon. She was also a gracious hostess to the many IVCLA international visitors who had the good fortune of having home hospitality in the Marwah home. Mrs. Marwah was dedicated to helping others throughout her life. She volunteered at Santa Monica Hospital for 20 years, and she and Dr. Marwah established many charitable foundations in their native Punjab, India. She was particularly passionate about helping women and believed strongly in the importance of educating girls. On June 3rd, she died peacefully with her family by her side.
While they will be dearly missed, may we all seek to emulate these two caring and compassionate people who always believed in something bigger than themselves; and in their honor, do our part to help make the world a better place.

Maya Angulo
(International Programming Intern)
A native Angeleno born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, Maya is beyond excited to be IVCLA's International Programming Intern this summer. She is a rising sophomore at Occidental College, majoring in Diplomacy and World Affairs and double minoring in History and Linguistics. She speaks fluent Spanish and began studying Arabic last year. Maya is passionate about IVCLA’s work in engaging citizen diplomacy as she believes cultural exchange and dialogue are at the heart of creating a safe, secure, and interconnected world that all people can participate in. In the future, she hopes to pursue a career in foreign service in the public or political diplomacy tracks. In the meantime, she’ll stick to exploring LA via metro and relaxing with her next historical read.
