The City of Greater Sudbury – News and Updates, June 2025

A Message from the Mayor

June Update

With warm weather on the way, it’s a great time to get outside and enjoy everything Greater Sudbury has to offer. June is Recreation and Parks Month—a perfect opportunity to explore our trails, splash pads and parks, and spend time with nature, family and friends.

This month, we invite you to visit one of our revitalized playgrounds across the community. While you're there, scan the QR code on the playground sign for a chance to win some great prizes—a fun way to rediscover what’s new in your neighbourhood.

Summer Day Camp registration is also open offering safe, fun, and engaging programs for children across the city. Learn more about our different day camp offerings and how to sign up at: greatersudbury.ca/day-camps.

And as always, warmer weather means construction season is in full swing. Crews are making important upgrades to our roads, underground infrastructure, and active transportation routes—essential investments in our city’s future. Whether you're walking, biking, driving or taking transit, plan ahead by visiting: greatersudbury.ca/construction.

Let’s make the most of this season together.

Mayor Paul Lefebvre

City of Greater Sudbury

Development Liaison Advisory Committee

The Development Liaison Advisory Committee (DLAC) held their first meeting of 2025 on May 22 at Place des Arts. This served as the launch of the new DLAC format that staff have developed, following the recommendation from the Future-Ready Development Ad-Hoc Committee, and engagement with DLAC members and community partners.

We are looking forward to seeing how this new format will increase engagement and help the City and the development community continue to build together.

To learn more about DLAC, you can visit the new webpage at overtoyou.greatersudbury.ca

Animal of the Month

Meet Milo!

Milo was adopted from the shelter as a young puppy and has recently been returned due to behavioural concerns. We’re now looking for an experienced owner to help him thrive and build his confidence.

At just seven months old, Milo is still a big pup learning the ropes. He needs time to build confidence with new people, as he can be nervous around strangers. But once he opens up, he’s affectionate, playful and loves being petted. He settles nicely, can keep himself busy outside and is fully house-trained—making him a great companion for someone with a little extra patience and care.

Milo cannot go to a home with cats or small dogs. However, he has done well meeting other dogs through the fence and enjoys running alongside them. A proper introduction would be needed if there are other dogs in the home. He also walks well on a leash and is already quite tall for his age.

With the right person by his side, Milo has the potential to become a truly amazing dog.

If you’re interested in meeting Milo please call the shelter at 705-694-7387, or visit greatersudbury.ca/adopt-a-pet.

BEV In-Depth: Mines to Mobility 2025 Conference

The 4th annual BEV In-Depth: Mines to Mobility conference was held May 28 and 29, with an opening dinner in the Vale Cavern at Science North, and the full day conference taking place in the Student Life Centre at Cambrian College. The conference was attended by over 250 delegates from across Canada, and some international guests. With over 40 speakers the dialogue continued to explore the requirements for building an integrated supply chain for critical minerals and BEV technology.

This year’s EV exhibit showcased both commercial and mining vehicles, open to conference delegates and the public. It also featured City of Greater Sudbury vehicles, including the electric Zamboni.

Congratulations to all our staff who worked to plan and execute another successful conference!

PC Recruiter

We are excited to announce the launch of our new reverse job board, designed to help local employers connect with job seekers.

Unlike traditional job boards, this system allows job seekers to upload their résumés to a centralized database. Employers in Greater Sudbury can then browse the database to identify candidates who may be a good fit for their open positions.

If you know anyone who is looking for a job, or may be interested, they can upload their résumé here: https://movetosudbury.ca/work/find-your-perfect-job/let-employers-find-you/.

This reverse job board is hosted on the City of Greater Sudbury’s talent attraction website, movetosudbury.ca

Way Finding

As part of the ongoing efforts to improve resident and visitor experiences in Greater Sudbury, an updated wayfinding strategy is being developed to explore ways to make it easier to navigate and connect with our city.

Residents will be invited to share their thoughts on Greater Sudbury’s Wayfinding strategy on Over To You when the survey is launched later this month. Updates will be posted on the City of Greater Sudbury’s social media sites.

This strategy is being created in association with pl.ural – a design planning firm rooted in landscape architecture, rural planning and graphic design. This project was made possible with support from the Ontario Active Transportation Fund.

GSCIP Open Houses and Public Hearing

The City is reviewing its financial incentive programs for private development throughout Greater Sudbury. Further to a municipal best practice review, and a review of existing Community Improvement Plans in effect for Greater Sudbury, staff is recommending existing programs be replaced with a new Greater Sudbury Community Improvement Plan (GSCIP). Public feedback  for the draft GSCIP is welcomed on overtoyou.greatersudbury.ca

Virtual open houses will be hosted via Zoom  June 17 and 18, 2025. A public hearing will be held in  City Council Chamber at Tom Davies Square at 1 p.m.  June 23, 2025. Residents are invited to attend and share their thoughts.

Celebrating Accessibility and Inclusion in Our Community

National AccessAbility Week (May 25 -31) honoured the many contributions of Canadians with disabilities and highlighted a shared commitment to building communities and workplaces that are inclusive, accessible and barrier-free for everyone.

Members of the City’s Accessibility Advisory Committee gathered to mark the official proclamation of National Accessibility Week on Monday, May 26, 2025 and joined Independent Living Sudbury Manitoulin (ILSM) for the “Cruisin’ for Inclusion” walk/roll on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

Earlier this year the City, in consultation with the Accessibility Advisory Panel, developed an Accessibility Policy, an important step in ensuring that persons with disabilities are actively consulted throughout the planning, development and implementation of municipal services, programs and infrastructure. The Accessibility Consultation Policy was presented to Council on October 22, and the bylaw was passed on November 12, 2024.

GOVA Transit Shelter Maintenance and Renewal Program

Between May and October 2025, GOVA Transit is actively removing some bus shelters in Greater Sudbury and replacing them with new or refurbished shelters. In addition to these upgrades, GOVA is regularly maintaining shelters to ensure safety and cleanliness; all shelters are being cleaned now and will continue to be cleaned throughout the summer.

Since 2021, 70 shelters have been upgraded through the GOVA Shelter Maintenance and Renewal program. This year, approximately  12 bus shelters are scheduled to be replaced or refurbished, with four  new shelter locations added and eight  existing shelters being replaced or refurbished. Information about this program and the shelters impacted can be found at: https://www.greatersudbury.ca/live/transit/riding-gova-transit/gova-shelter-maintenance-and-renewal-program2/

Off-Duty Paramedics Applauded for Life-Saving Actions at Sudbury Rocks Marathon

Several off-duty City of Greater Sudbury paramedics are being praised for their quick-thinking and life-saving intervention during the Sudbury Rocks Marathon May 25, 2025.

Paramedics Kassandra Tancorre, Vero Hamelin, Shay Bonnett and Katie Nippard were participating in the marathon as a group, when they noticed a commotion and saw a spectator on the ground.

The paramedics immediately ran to the spectator’s aid and found the individual unresponsive and without a pulse. They immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and Bonnett ran to the nearby YMCA to retrieve an automated external defibrillator (AED).

After CPR, the patient regained a pulse and spontaneous circulation. By this time, others, including two police officers and a sports medicine doctor, had arrived to assist.

An on-duty paramedic crew, Bailey Dybajlo and Alex Martel, arrived at the scene shortly after. They assumed patient care and treatment and transported the patient to Health Sciences North. At the time of transport, the patient was fully conscious and alert.

City and Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services have launched an initiative to help connect members of the public with the paramedics who may have provided them with life-saving care. Residents wishing to express gratitude or share their stories, particularly following a cardiac arrest save, are encouraged to do so through the "Thank a Paramedic" page on the City's website at www.greatersudbury.ca/thank-a-paramedic.
