A Message from the President

|
It’s been less than a month for me as President of Bexley Seabury, but I’ve already begun to settle into the rhythm of summer life here in the office. Students come for intensive classes and then go back home to their regular lives and ministries, the faculty and staff work diligently in their offices, and then take well-deserved vacation time. But, of course, this summer has kicked us out of our easy routine in a number of important ways.
News from our Southern border about the treatment of asylum-seekers and others entering the United States—especially children—has moved many in our community to respond in various ways. Our Academic Dean, Terry DeLisio, signed a statement on our behalf along with many more representatives from the Association of Theological Schools. And I have heard from others, including several alumni, of statements endorsed, protests attended, and money donated. Our community has joined with so many to insist that our government respect the dignity of every human being.
Less urgently, but still taking a great deal of our attention, preparations continue for the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas, next month. Our faculty and staff will be there to participate in the Convention business, witness to the exciting things happening at Bexley Seabury, and celebrate and reconnect with our alumni and friends. If you’ll be there, I hope you’ll stop by the booth, and our reception, to tell us about your life and ministry. Details of how to find us are elsewhere in this newsletter.
Jesus never promised us that the Christian life would be one of regularity or ease. Indeed, one need only look around to see that the so-called interruptions are often the best opportunities to live into and share the Gospel. I pray that as God “troubles the water” of your summer rhythm, that you find in it an invitation to healing and hope.
Micah
