Welcome to the newest edition of the Cornerstones newsletter. The BACnet International community benefits from information and education shared through Cornerstones, the organization's monthly electronic publication. This publication is distributed to members of the BACnet International community, connecting corporate, integrator, site, student and individual users to BACnet news and updates.

Cornerstones is a unique publication because it speaks not only to the engineer and contractor communities, but also to facility professionals, building managers and owners, and other personnel.

BACnet International Cybersecurity Acceleration Program

With the phenomenal success of the BACnet Secure Connect Interoperability Acceleration Program, BACnet International would like to invite you to the next phase of BACnet cybersecurity.

New Voting Member of

BACnet Testing Laboratories Working Group Announced

BACnet International is proud to announce that Deborah Barrett will continue as a voting member of the BACnet Testing Laboratories Working Group (BTL-WG). Barrett was inducted during a BTL-WG virtual meeting on August 20, 2020, and will begin a new five-year term on July 1, 2024.

The BTL-WG operates under the auspices of BACnet International.

“Deborah has been a long-time, valuable member of the BTL Working Group in multiple capacities,” stated Andy McMillian, BACnet International President. “We look forward to her continued service with the group.”

Barrett is a senior test engineer at Current Lighting and is responsible for working with developers and testing systems to ensure products meet both the functional and technical BACnet requirements from stakeholders.

Her primary experience is working with and testing BACnet servers for networked lighting control products. As part of her role as a test engineer, she will continue to be a contributing member of the BTL Working Group.

Join us for this year's PlugFest!

Come test your BACnet products with BACnet devices from other vendors in a neutral and friendly environment and have the opportunity to improve your BACnet implementation and testing methods!

This year's PlugFest will take place Tuesday, October 3rd through Thursday, October 5th at the University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Laboratory. Registration will open next month. Learn from last year's attendees about the product testing benefits and networking opportunities available at PlugFest.

Every month, BACnet International will highlight a resource from The BACnet Institute Resource Library!

In this month's featured resource is the The BACnet Device Profiles course. The course explains the various BACnet device profiles and how the profiles can be effectively used to ensure the successful specification of BACnet in a Building Automation System (BAS) implementation. In this course, the purpose of each BACnet Device Profile is defined, explaining the role each plays in the context of building automation and how the profiles can be effectively combined in a specification to ensure the functionality required is achieved. Learning objectives include:

Explaining why Device Profiles are an important element in specifying a BACnet device
Describing the basic concepts of BACnet Building Blocks (BIBBs) and how they relate to Device Profiles
Recognizing the name and identify the purpose of all BACnet Device Profiles
Defining the ways in which different profiles can be combined in a single device
Explaining why selecting a Device Profile may not be sufficient to fully specify the BACnet device required in a specific application
Recognizing and specify valid BACnet Device Profiles

The BACnet Institute (TBI) is an online portal for BACnet-focused learning and knowledge sharing. It provides an easy path to BACnet information and learning for everyone involved with BACnet systems. The portal includes three on-demand FREE courses and over 160 resources including white papers, articles, presentations and a community forum. TBI Resources are free, but registration for an account is required. Courses are eligible for CEUs and PDHs.

Each year TBI continues to grow. Since its launch in January 2017, over 6,000 registered users across more than 80 countries have accessed its resources. TBI’s simple search function allows users to get quick access to anything they need.
