Our Commitment: Addressing Racism
Elizabeth Meade, MD, FAAP
President, WCAAP

It is difficult to know how to write this month's message, to address the sadness and outrage our country is experiencing, and to acknowledge that we are still deeply failing many of our fellow citizens, colleagues, patients, friends, and communities. The recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many other Black men, women, and children in the United States illustrate the ongoing individual, systemic, and institutional racism that continues to harm and kill Black Americans.

Anti-Racism Resources

Thank you to many WCAAP members who have recently shared resources to improve our understanding of the effects of racism on child and family well-being and how we can play a role in dismantling racist systems. We have put together several resources as a starting point. Each month in forthcoming issues of Developments, a WCAAP member will share a resource they have found helpful and why. If you are interested to contribute a few words about a resource you have utilized please let us know.

If you are in the Seattle area, there will be a health care & public health worker protest to demand justice to end police violence on Saturday, June 6th at 9:00am. Here are all the details! Look for WCAAP signs to find fellow WCAAP members participating.

Why I Advocate: Reflections on 10 Years Advocating with WCAAP
Lelach Rave, MD, FAAP
WCAAP Legislative Committee

The first time I testified in Olympia, I made the trip while on maternity leave with a newborn - a perfect time to take a spitty infant on a long car trip to a formal hearing room. I recall sitting with my daughter, who was sleeping peacefully, waiting for my turn to speak. I handed her off to Laurie Lippold (WCAAP lobbyist at the time) when my turn came, hoping that she would stay quiet as much as I hoped that I wouldn't mess up.

Inner-Heroes Wanted: Parenting in the Age of COVID-19
Chris Ladish, MD
Chief Clinical Officer of Pediatric Behavioral Health
Mary Bridge Children's Hospital & Health Network

The COVID-19 pandemic has left our families' and children's lives disrupted in ways most of us has not ever imagined.  Parents not only worry about their health and their family's health, many are also struggling with job loss, food insecurity, child care needs, and many other factors influencing day to day stress levels.  On top of raising children, parents are being called to step in as home-school teachers, counselors, nurses, music instructors, special educators, activity coordinators, coaches, technology experts and a host of other roles.  Parenting in a pandemic has become an ultramarathon journey of multiple responsibilities that parents did not see coming, a survival race for which there was no time to train or prepare.  Fortunately, like their children, parents are resilient, imaginative and amazing.  They are the less-celebrated heroes of COVID and as providers, we need to remind them.

Yakima Pediatrics, WCAAP, and Vroom Promote
Brain Development Tools
Mary Virginia Maxwell, M.Ed, LMHC
Yakima Pediatrics

Yakima Pediatrics, a pediatric clinic associated with Community Health of Central Washington, and Educational Service District 105 are collaborating to offer a virtual one-hour
Lunch and Learn All About Vroom at 12:00PM on June 17, 2020. We will be sharing the power of Vroom with our early learning educators. As an integrated behavioral health provider at Yakima Pediatrics I have delighted in the opportunity to offer concrete ways for care givers to strengthen their bond with their child using the basics of Vroom - Look, Follow, Chat, Take Turns and Stretch. I was also so happy to introduce Vroom to our amazing educator teams in our early learning centers.

What do dogs, skateboards and swimming pools have in common? Pediatric virtual visits.  Puppies jumping on children, dogs barking, siblings photobombing, and a patient jumping in a swimming pool during a visit are a few of the interruptions pediatric providers experience while conducting virtual visits during the COVID-19 pandemic.
