As One School Year Ends, The Hive Readies for Another to Begin
The 2018-’19 school-year came to a close on the first weekend in June when the Class of '19 was joined by the 50th Reunion Class of 1969 for all the pomp and circumstance surrounding graduation.

The 145th Commencement on June 2 was preceded three days earlier by the naming of Wood-May Joseph as the 74th Presidential Award winner. Click here for more details, including photos of all the events that coincided with the highly-entertaining Commencement.

The Summer Phase to kick off the 2019-2020 school year will commence with classes on Monday, July 29. The four-week session begins the day before with the Freshman Overnight, which will be run by our new Senior Group Leaders. The “Senior Seven” are Jonathan Oniyama (Senior Group Leader), Ibrahim Stradford (Maroon Section Leader), Khyri Brewer (Transfer Leader), Anthony Augustin (Freshmen Leader), Daniel Simoes (Blue Section Leader), Kevin Calle (White Section Leader) and Chrisley Alexis (Gray Section Leader).

In-state schools are also well represented, among those being NJIT, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Saint Peter's, Kean, William Paterson, Stockton, Rowan, Rider, New Jersey City, College of NJ, Monmouth, Montclair, FDU, Caldwell and Drew.

The Civil Rights Trail: Nine SBP students took a unique journey during Spring Phase entitled “From Newark to New Insights: Our Journey On The Civil Rights Trail." The three-week trek through Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee left a lasting impression on each of the students. Read more about their memorable trip.

Another Spring Phase Project, “Men Who Cook,” was the focus of the filming of a show, called Random Acts of Cooking. The show is produced by Only Good News TV, who approached us after learning about SBP through 60 Minutes. Stay tuned for the air date.

St. Benedict’s Urban Farm, behind Leahy House, is in full swing with five students working and being paid this summer through the Newark One Stop Career Center. They are growing radishes, Swiss chard, kale, arugula, collards, eggplant, zucchini, and cherry and Jersey tomatoes. Peter Klebaur ’72 was an enormous help during the pre-spring preparation. A master gardener himself, he not only donates his building expertise, but also his home-grown vegetable seedlings.
ALUMNI
The Senior Alumni Luncheon , for any St. Benedict's alums who graduated from The Hive 50 years ago or more, was held Friday, June 7, in Spring Lake at the Jersey Shore. The event, in its 32nd year, attracted a record crowd of more than 200 for the annual gathering at The Breakers on the Ocean and featured Fr. Edwin’s annual state of the school address followed by Q&A session. Joe Barber (surrounded by the new Senior Group Leaders), from the Class of '44, was the oldest alum to attend the event. Click here for more details and photos.

Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Gilbert Gaul ’69 will have his fourth book, The Geography of Risk: Epic Storms, Rising Seas and the Cost of America's Coasts, published September 3rd by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. After Hurricane Sandy, Gil spent four years researching the development of the modern coast and the increased threats posed by climate change, sea level rise and larger, more powerful storms — nearly $800 billion in damage in the last two decades alone. Click here to pre-order Gaul’s latest work.

Our own Dr. Ivan Lamourt ’82 was on NJTV earlier this month with Steve Adubato’s “Think Tank.” Dr. Lamourt was a panelist on the June 1 program entitled, “Breaking the Cycle: Youth and Teen Bullying and Abuse.” Click here to watch the program.

The Class of ’69 celebrated its 50th Reunion during Commencement weekend. The members were awarded a Golden Jubilee Citation and, just as the student graduates received their diplomas, the 50th Reunion class were invited to walk across the stage and ring the Coker Bell, which is utilized to signify any extraordinary accomplishment at St. Benedict’s. The 69ers, whose class gift topped $250,000, also dedicated the physics lab at The Hive in the name of their late classmate, Fr. Mark Payne, and all of their other deceased classmates .
