Take Action!

The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, a federal budget package that includes proposed cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. If passed, these changes could:

  • Eliminate funding for programs like Meals on Wheels
  • Strip benefits from millions of older adults, adults with disabilities, and low-income individuals
  • Shift costs to states, threatening the long-term care network

The bill now moves to the Senate, where changes are expected.

Take Action!

Click here to contact your U.S. Senators (under “Find your elected officials”) to oppose cuts to Medicaid and SNAP for older adults and adults with disabilities. Personalized testimony is encouraged if you have a story about how in-home supports through Medicaid HCBS or SNAP benefits have made a difference to you or a loved one.

Thank you for taking the time to speak up on this important matter!

Have you heard of TCOA's SHIP Program?

TCOA's SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program), previously called MMAP, provides trained counselors to help older adults and adults with disabilities navigate Medicare and Medicaid. Previously serving only the tri-county area of Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham, TCOA's SHIP program now serves Shiawassee County as well.

SHIP helps individuals with the following needs:

  • Getting started with Medicare (enrollment in a drug plan or advantage plan)
  • Medicare questions (Medicare 101) or questions on drug coverage and/or coverage concerns
  • Conference calls to Medicare or to a pharmacy if needed
  • Medicare Review (reviewing drug plan or advantage plan coverage)
  • Open enrollment (October 15- Dec 7th; changing Medicare coverage)
  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (Jan 1- Mar 31; changing advantage plans)
  • Filling out Medicaid applications (as long as they have Medicare)
  • Filling out MSP (Medicare Savings Program) and LIS (application to help lower drug cost)
  • SEP (Special Enrollment period; allows folks to make a change to their coverage outside of a time period)

To schedule an appointment with a local SHIP Counselor or for more information call: (517) 887-1416.

To volunteer as a SHIP Counselor (a great opportunity to become familiar with Medicare/Medicaid!) contact NicholsK@tcoa.org or 517-887-1487.

Volunteer Spotlight

The Volunteer Spotlight for June is... Kathy, President on TCOA's Advisory Council!

Kathy is retired from Sparrow Health where she worked as a nurse in the hospital and most recently for Sparrow Care Network (SCN). It was at SCN where she learned about TCOA and the dedicated staff and volunteers. At one point Kathy was trained as a PATH (Personal Action Toward Health) provider. "I witnessed that TCOA is a vital community resource and how the organization helps to support countless individuals in our community, so it was a natural fit when I was asked to serve on TCOA's Advisory Council. I've seen first hand the wonderful work that TCOA does and have heard from many in my community who have benefited from TCOA's assistance. I recently had a conversation with someone who visited with a specialist at TCOA to help her mother navigate aging at home. This individual was overwhelmed by the kindness shown to her and her mother and was amazed by the support they were given. TCOA is a hidden gem in our community. We need to continue to support them and get the word out!" Thank you for your kind words, Kathy!

Kathy also serves as Chair of the East Lansing Senior Commission, is a member of the East Lansing Age Friendly Community Committee, volunteers at MSU Horticulture and MSU Beal Gardens and serves on the board of Heart of the Lakes which supports the work of Michigan land conservancies.

Thank you so much, Kathy, for caring for so many in the community!
