This month we will spotlight our two Educator-of-the-Year award winners, and in July we will introduce you to our manufacturing partner award winners.

Kevin Davenport wins FLATE 2023 Distinguished Manufacturing Secondary Educator-of-the-Year
|
|
Kevin Davenport, Instructor of Engineering & Manufacturing at The Academy of Engineering & Environmental Science at Creekside High School in St. Johns, FL, is a 13-year veteran of teaching in St. Johns County School District’s Career and Technical Education department.
Kevin is a licensed engineer and has over 30 years of industry experience, but his true passion is training students for, and aligning them with, powerful opportunities for their future. Specifically, his interests are creating business partnerships, student mentoring opportunities and internships to supercharge student growth and interest in the STEM and manufacturing fields. He is the sponsor and lead mentor for Creekside’s FIRST Robotics Team 8775 and leads several extracurricular activities including Engineering Club, Society of Women Engineers, National Technical Honor Society and ACE Mentoring. He holds fast to the belief that most of the “good stuff” happens outside the confines of the traditional school day. The culmination of many of Creekside’s student’s high school careers are obtaining one of approximately 25 summer internships in the industry. These opportunities exist because Kevin maintains and curates relationships with the sponsoring companies and organizations.
Keven believes that manufacturing education is important because “Manufacturing and STEM education can function as a catalyst for students, igniting a passion which may have gone undiscovered. Not every child is financially or emotionally prepared to transition directly into a 4-year college. Through certifications in design programs and MSCC,
many students are able to go directly to work in manufacturing and STEM fields. From there, they can receive tuition reimbursement and work toward advanced degrees should they choose.”

Greg Lewis wins FLATE 2023 Distinguished Manufacturing Post-Secondary Educator-of-the-Year
|
|
Greg Lewis is a Professor in Engineering Technology (ET) at St. Petersburg College in Clearwater, FL, where he has been teaching Engineering Graphics and Design since 1997. Greg was the first instructor to teach SolidWorks in the state of Florida in 1999. He still teaches SolidWorks and also Design/Revit, CNC Programming, FEA Analysis, Manufacturing Design, Architectural Mechanical Design, Rapid Prototyping and 3D Printing.
Greg also works with the St. Petersburg College Engineering Club, provides summer camp opportunities to middle and high school students designing and building robots using SolidWorks, and has been on advisory committees for local area high schools for over ten years. Greg’s other professional awards include St. Petersburg College Instructor of the year in 2015 (nominated again in 2022) and the National League of Innovation 2019 League Excellence Award.
Greg believes that manufacturing education is important because "through technology the field of manufacturing will only become more enhanced with well-rounded educated students leading to a country that is independent of our global competitors. St. Petersburg College is educating and inspiring students to build a rewarding career, so they are competitive for the future as manufacturing continues to advance through the digital transformation. "

FLATE 2023 Summer Teacher Institute Hosted at
St. Pete College Last Week
|
|
The FLATE Summer Teacher Institute hosted at St. Pete College held on June 12-16thwas a professional development opportunity for teachers to learn new technologies and connect with educators across the state. Special thanks to the team of faculty presenters at St. Pete College for presenting at the institute, including Sid Martin, Brian Bell, Andres Cardenas-Valencia, and Greg Lewis. The technology presented by the faculty included measurements, Fusion 360, robotics, and electric vehicle technology. In addition, several partners presented, including Dr. Gloria Wiens from the University of South Florida on robotics, Roy Kirchner, CEO of Ultimate 3D Printing, on 3D printing technologies, and the week was wrapped up with a presentation on Robotics from Nathan Hicks, and Steve Cercone of Bluegrass Educational Technologies. A special thanks to companies that provided tours to educators, including Kemco, Inventorium, and TSE Industries. The feedback from the attendees was very positive, and FLATE is looking forward to hosting many more professional development opportunities. Dr. Marilyn Barger (principal investigator) and Sam Ajlani (co-principal investigator) of NSF ATE grant award Industry 4.0 Skills for Manufacturing Technicians (NSF Award 2148138) were both recognized for their achievements in a recent ATE Impacts article published in May 2023 that highlights not only their personal achievements, but the impacts they have made (and continue to make) in advancing technological education and the partnerships between education, industry and affiliated associations in their fields. The National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program supports the education of technicians for the high-technology fields that drive our nation's economy, focusing on two-year Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs).

National Center of Excellence - Cyber Defense

Congratulations to Dr. Ron Eaglin, Chair, Engineering and Information Technology at Daytona State College, and his team for being designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C). The NCAE-C program is managed by NSA's National Cryptologic School. Federal partners include the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)/National Initiative on Cybersecurity Education (NICE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Defense Office of the Chief Information Officer (DoD-CIO), and U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM). With the CAE-C designation, the Government formally recognizes Daytona State College for its robust cybersecurity-related programs. Daytona State College has undergone an in-depth evaluation and has met rigorous requirements to be designated. They are well-postured to equip students with expertise and skills to protect and defend against the modern cyber threat landscape.

Summer Camps Ignite Students' Passion for STEM & Manufacturing Related Careers
STEM and Manufacturing Camps take students on an in-depth exploration of some of the most recent technologies used in high-tech manufacturing environments. Students develop real-world skills through a fun hands-on exploration of STEM and manufacturing related topics. Every year FLATE supports and promotes these types of opportunities for students to “plant the seed” at an early age when their career choices can be influenced by sparking their interest in STEM and manufacturing. 3D & Electronics
Nuts, Bolts, & Thingamajigs Summer Camp
St. Petersburg College Clearwater Campus
June 5-9
This exciting camp introduced middle school campers to Manufacturing and basic Mechanical and Electronics engineering. Topics included introduction to CAD-3D design, SolidWorks, electricity, and intro to microcontrollers. Participants had the opportunity to have local engineers and entrepreneurs as speakers, and visited local manufacturers.

Middle School Robotics Camps Hillsborough Community College (Brandon), June 12-23
HCC Robotics Camps introduce middle school students to the world of robotics, exploring their application in both industry and personal use: a mixture of Lego educational materials and STEM and manufacturing content conducted in an environment of competitive problem solving.
Intro Camp - students program and reconfigure Lego EV3 Mindstorms Robot and participate in a “robotics team challenge”.
All Girls Robotics Camp - a FREE camp sponsored by local Bay Area Manufacturers, campers program and reconfigure a more advanced level Lego EV3 Mindstorms Robot.

Virtual Workshops - July/August

The workshops are open to researchers, industry plant managers, and manufacturing engineers who have knowledge/experience in the topic area. Each participant is required to give a presentation (8-10 min) about their research/industry initiatives. A stipend of $600/participant will be provided. The goal is to allow academic and industry professionals to share research and case studies, brainstorm about research road maps for successful implementation of Industry 4.0 technology, and form partnerships to enable smart working in the 21st century.
Workshops include AR/VR (July 13), Digital Twin/Cyber Physical Systems/Cyber Manufacturing (July 20), Collaborative Robotics (July 27), Internet of Things (Aug 2), and Data Analytics & Machine Learning (Aug 10). All workshops will be held via Zoom from 9:00AM to noon (Central DT).

Fall 2023 PocketLab Pilot Study for Middle School Science Teachers - Stipend + Free Licenses & Sensors
|
|
Participating teachers will be randomized into the PocketLab group or the control group. PocketLab teachers will be asked to use PocketLab G-Force sensors and the PocketLab Notebook with their students to complete classroom activities focused on concepts of forces and motion. Control group teachers will be asked to teach these topics as they normally do and will have the option to use PocketLab with their students at the conclusion of the study. Participants will receive either $500 or $800 (Control group or not), a one-year license to PocketLab Notebook Pro ($150 value), and your choice of a PocketLab Voyager sensor ($198 value) or a PocketLab G-Force sensor ($129 value).

Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs provides scholarships for students pursuing degrees leading to manufacturing careers Applications for Spring 2024 open July 1, 2023
In 2022, NBT awarded $95,000 in scholarship awards to 62 students pursuing degrees in manufacturing industry-related fields of study. NBT’s manufacturing camp program achieved new levels of success by supporting 165 camps across 26 U.S. states.
There are other scholarships available to support manufacturing students. Be sure to check with your local school and Regional Manufacturing Association (RMA) for other scholarships available to you! Find a list of RMA's HERE!

Highly Dexterous Robot Hand Can Operate in the Dark
|
|
The U.S. National Science Foundation-supported researchers at Columbia Engineering have demonstrated a highly dexterous robot hand that combines an advanced sense of touch with motor learning algorithms, which allow a robot to learn new physical tasks via practice. The fact that the hand does not rely on vision to manipulate objects means that it can do so in very difficult lighting conditions that would confuse vision-based algorithms — it can even operate in the dark.
