Federation for Manufacturing Education (FAME) in Florida
FAME AMT students are enrolled in an Associate of Science (AS) or Associate of Applied Science Degree program at a technical or community college called Advanced Manufacturing Technician. The 5-semester cohort program begins with a summer of work at a FAME employer. During the fall and spring academic terms, AMT student are in class 2 days per week and working 3 days per week at their FAME employer.
In 2021, Daytona State College in Daytona Beach started the first FAME chapter in Florida. The Sunshine Chapter startup was delayed a year due to the pandemic with nine students and eleven local manufacturers. A second FAME cohort at Daytona had its signing day last month and is starting their jobs with their FAME employers this summer. A second Florida FAME chapter is currently being established by industry in the region served by Gulf Coast State College (GCSC). Both programs are built on the A.S. Engineering Technology Advanced Manufacturing Specialization.
With industry support, the FAME program providing 1,800 on-the-job training could be quickly started up at any of the colleges in Florida offering the A.S. Engineering Technology.

FloridaMakes Enhances Apprenticeship Programs
with Florida Ready to Work
Earlier this year, FloridaMakes announced a new strategic partnership with the Florida Ready to Work program. As a part of this partnership, Florida Makes is the first statewide association to add Florida Ready to Work’s essential soft skills training to their required apprenticeship curriculum. FloridaMakes recognizes that the lack of essential employability skills is a barrier to job and economic growth in the state. In 2020, the Florida Chamber of Commerce surveyed businesses and found that more than 80% of Florida business leaders “emphasized the importance of employability skills. These skills which include communication, critical thinking and problem solving are universally valuable work competencies that are essential to adapting to shifting demands within and between careers.”
The Florida Ready to Work program is accessible online, 24 / 7 from any mobile device and is free for Florida schools, colleges, adult education programs, community-based organizations, and employers. Participating colleges can enroll students and then the student can take the courseware to prepare for the assessment. This program provides students the opportunity to earn up to two additional credentials for their portfolios.

Hybrid PLC Mechatronics - Free Materials
Information for courses in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology and Mechatronics: The two Hybrid texts as well as the Fundamentals of Electricity texts are free to use. The courses listed on this website use other free books as well. The course EET 3050 uses a text written using the Malvino text as a model. This course is taught as a course for non-majors in various Technology fields. The Hybrid Text and Hybrid Lab Text use the factory as the model. The PLC is a tool in this scenario, being used to solve problems, some simple, some complex. The Hybrid Text is for the study of automation using primarily the PLC – Hybrid was the name selected due to the decision to teach Allen-Bradley and Siemens together. The Hybrid Lab Text is a support text giving further explanations of many of the labs discussed in the Hybrid Text. The videos are lectures explaining the content of the Hybrid Text and problems at the end of the chapters. Also included are solutions or partial solutions to the labs. Some of the later labs are demonstrated.

Astronomers reveal first image of the black hole
at the heart of our galaxy
During a press conference hosted by the U.S. National Science Foundation with the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration in Washington, D.C. last month, astronomers unveiled the first image of the supermassive black hole at the center of our own Milky Way galaxy. This result provides overwhelming evidence that the object is indeed a black hole and yields valuable clues about the workings of such giants, which are thought to reside at the center of most galaxies. The image was produced by a global research team called the Event Horizon Telescope, or EHT, Collaboration, using observations from a worldwide network of radio telescopes.

Why You Need Standards:
Learn how NIST helps make the world work
When we talk about standards in our personal lives, we might think about the quality we expect in things such as restaurants and first dates. But the standards that exist in science and technology have an even greater impact on our lives. Technical standards keep us safe, enable technology to advance, and help businesses succeed. They quietly make the modern world tick and prevent technological problems that you might not realize could even happen. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has been deeply devoted to efforts in this area for more than 120 years. NIST has brought about improvements to everyday life you may take for granted, and solved problems that have advanced everything from manufacturing to public safety.

NIST Awards Funding to Strengthen Advanced Manufacturing for Critical and Emerging Technologies
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has awarded a total of $2.08 million to seven organizations in six states to develop manufacturing technology roadmaps to strengthen U.S. innovation and productivity across entire industry sectors. This is the second round of grants awarded to universities, industry and nonprofit organizations through NIST’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology Roadmap Program (MfgTech). Each award of up to $300,000 will fund projects for up to 18 months to address national priorities such as manufacturing of critical infrastructure, communication, and transformative approaches and technologies in construction. NIST plans to make additional awards under different categories.
