June Funding Focus Newsletter #2
| | Our editorial team is keeping abreast of the current status of federally funded opportunities. Such opportunities advertised here, to our knowledge at time of publication, are active. However, please continue to check solicitation websites for updates to U.S. Government opportunities of interest. | | |
What is a Limited Submission?
A limited submission solicitation places a cap on the number of proposals Auburn may submit to a sponsor. Auburn coordinates limited submissions with notifications via this newsletter and competitions created in the Auburn University Competition Space (InfoReady). To apply to any limited submission posted in this newsletter, click on the link within the announcement. Please refer to the Limited Submission Procedures page for a general list of requirements.
Found a Limited Submission opportunity that interests you?
If so, please contact the PSFS office sooner than later so that an internal competition can be created for a timely, university-wide, fair and equitable selection process that allows for ample time for review, feedback and revisions.

NIH: Modern Equipment for Shared-use Biomedical Research Facilities: Advancing Research-Related Operations (S15 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This NOFO invites eligible academic or research institutions to apply for funding support to purchase latest scientific equipment that will enhance and modernize research-supporting operations of existing shared biomedical research facilities. Targeted are laboratory research core facilities, animal research facilities, and other similar shared-use research spaces. The equipment must be placed in a core facility, an animal research facility, or other shared used space to ensure that it supports research-related needs of a broad institutional research community. The goal of this NOFO is to strengthen research-auxiliary activities of biomedical research facilities and to enhance the efficiency of their operations.
The NOFO does not support the purchase of scientific research instruments or their components, nor components of building-level infrastructure equipment that indirectly support research activities.
Institutional Limit: One (1) Proposal
Internal Deadline: July 9, 2025, 4:45pm
Funder Deadline: September 25, 2025, 5:00pm CT

Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program: Instrument Acquisition or Development
This MRI award supports the acquisition of a multi-user research instrument that is commercially available through direct purchase from a vendor, or for the personnel costs and equipment that are required for the development of an instrument with new capabilities, thereby advancing instrumentation capabilities and enhancing expertise for instrument design and fabrication at academic institutions.
MRI provides support to acquire critical research instrumentation for advances in fundamental science and engineering research which may not otherwise occur. MRI also provides support to obtain next-generation research instruments by developing instruments with new capabilities that open new opportunities to advance the frontiers in science and engineering research. Additionally, an MRI award is expected to enhance research training of students who will become the next generation of instrument users, designers and builders.
An MRI research instrument need not be physically located in a conventional laboratory setting, nor does an instrument need to be "physical" at all. MRI continues to support distributed/networked instruments and cyberinstrumentation that is not appropriate for support through other NSF programs.
-
Track 1: Proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than $100,000 and less than $1,400,000; two (2) submissions allowed.
-
Track 2: MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $1,400,000 up to and including $4,000,000; one (1) submission allowed.
-
Track 3 (Consistent with section 10373 of the "CHIPS and Science Act of 2022"): Proposals that request funds from NSF greater than or equal $100,000 and less than or equal to $4,000,000 that include the purchase, development, installation, operation and maintenance of equipment and instrumentation to conserve or reduce the consumption of helium; one (1) submission allowed.
*Please Note Funder’s Limitations for Subawardees:
The NSF announcement stipulates an institution’s inclusion as a funded subawardee on a development proposal at a level in excess of 20% of the total budget requested from NSF, or as a funded subawardee on any acquisition proposal will be counted against an organization's proposal submission limit in Tracks 1 and 2. If collaborating on another (lead) institution’s proposal at the aforementioned funding levels, that proposal should be entered into this internal submission competition as it could count as one of Auburn’s four (4) allowed submissions. An unfunded collaboration does not count against the submission limit.
Institutional Limit: Four (4) Proposals
Internal Deadline: July 18, 2025, 4:45pm
Funder Deadline: November 14, 2025, 5:00pm CT

Burroughs Wellcome Fund: Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease
This program provides opportunities for assistant professors to bring multidisciplinary approaches to studying human infectious diseases. The program aims to provide accomplished investigators at the assistant professor level with opportunities to study what happens at the points where the systems of humans and potentially infectious agents connect. The program supports research that sheds light on the fundamentals that affect the outcomes of these encounters: how colonization, infection, commensalism, and other relationships play out at levels ranging from molecular interactions to systemic ones.
LOIs Due: July 17, 2025, 3:00pm ET
