A Message from the President and CEO
Greetings!

A few weeks ago, the Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary. It was great to reflect on the past twenty-five years of promoting and facilitating philanthropy and the impact it has had on our community.

As a Community Foundation we believe that philanthropy is something everyone can and should engage in, as fundamentally, philanthropy is about civic engagement. It’s what you do to improve the quality of life for others in your community. It’s about being informed and engaged in your community. It’s about building networks to share information and effect positive change. It’s about voting. It’s about little acts of kindness. And yes, it’s about giving too. So, if you’ve got a bit more than you need, please share. Any amount counts, and it all adds up.

In the context of civic engagement, and as we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, let’s remember the words of President John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” This mantra is as important and necessary today as ever with the forces of disintegration all around us. You can’t make a difference if you’re not in the game.

Happy 4th of July – God Bless America!

Regards,
Jay Linnehan

WANTED: GLCF Partner Video Messages
This year, the Greater Lowell Community Foundation (GLCF) is celebrating our 25th Anniversary. In 1997, GLCF was formed, appropriately so, by the community – a great group of diverse people who cared deeply about their community. Their generosity was their commitment to improving the quality of life in the Greater Lowell region.

As GLCF celebrates 25 years of improving the quality of life in Greater Lowell through impactful, strategic philanthropy, we recognize that it is community partners like YOU who have made our work possible. We invite you to record a short video anniversary message and upload it by August 15, 2022.

Grant Update: The Phoenix - Community Recovery Support Program
The Phoenix leverages social connection and physical activity to help people overcome substance use disorder and lead meaningful lives in recoveryLast fall they received a GLCF COVID Phase 3 Mental Health Support Grant for their Community Recovery Support Program. With support from the Greater Lowell Community Foundation, The Phoenix provided free fitness and social activities to build meaningful connections for people in need of support. Their community-driven activities allowed those with substance use disorder to recover together and lean on one another for mental health support.

During the pandemic, people experience increased levels of social isolation and trauma—two experiences that often fuel addiction. The Phoenix provided a community of support where people could come together in a healing environment to connect with sober peers, learn new skills, push their bodies through fitness workouts, and have fun together.
They supported Phoenix participants, who they refer to as “Team Members,” to build resilience and confidence. As Team Members increased self-esteem, they trained individuals to be leaders in the community as volunteers. Through this project, they trained and supported six new volunteers who now lead Phoenix classes regularly. Thus far, The Phoenix has served 510 people in Lowell and of the total members served, 321 were new to The Phoenix this year.
