A Message from our District Chair

District Chair, Hunterdon Arrowhead District

A Time to Celebrate Service, Patriotism, and Scouting

As we enter the month of June, we find ourselves in a season of celebration, reflection, and gratitude. Across Hunterdon County, communities are gathering to commemorate America's 250th Anniversary, a milestone that invites us to reflect on the ideals that shaped our nation and continue to inspire future generations.

The values that guided our nation's founders, duty, service, leadership, integrity, and commitment to community—are the very same values that have been at the heart of the Scouting movement for more than a century. Every time a Scout recites the Scout Oath and Scout Law, they affirm principles that strengthen not only their character but also our communities and our nation.

As Hunterdon County participates in the celebrations surrounding our nation's Semiquincentennial, I am reminded that Scouting plays a vital role in preparing young people to become informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. Through service projects, leadership opportunities, outdoor adventures, and community involvement, our Scouts learn that citizenship is not simply something we inherit it is something we actively practice.

This month also provides an opportunity to thank the many dedicated volunteers who make Scouting possible throughout Hunterdon County. Our leaders, committee members, merit badge counselors, commissioners, chartered organization partners, and countless parents give generously of their time, talents, and energy. Because of your commitment, young people across our district continue to experience the life-changing benefits of Scouting.

I would especially like to reflect on the recent Hunterdon Arrowhead District Awards Program. It was truly one of the most inspiring evenings of the year. Gathering to recognize the outstanding service of our volunteers reminded us of all of the extraordinary impact that Scouting continues to have throughout our communities.

The stories shared that evening highlighted countless hours of service, mentorship, and dedication to our youth. We celebrated leaders who have devoted years—and in many cases decades—to helping young people develop confidence, character, and leadership skills. Their efforts often take place quietly behind the scenes, but their impact is felt in every successful troop meeting, campout, service project, Eagle Scout project, and advancement milestone.

The awards program also served as a powerful reminder that Scouting remains strong in Hunterdon County because of the people who believe in its mission. Every volunteer recognized that evening represents hundreds of young lives positively influenced through their guidance and example. Their dedication ensures that the values of Scouting continue to be passed on to the next generation.

As we enjoy summer activities, camp programs, outdoor adventures, and community celebrations, let us take pride in the role Scouting plays in strengthening our communities and preparing future leaders. Together, we are helping young people develop the character and citizenship skills that our nation needs now more than ever.

Thank you for all that you do for Scouting and for the youth of Hunterdon County. Your service reflects the very best of the American spirit and exemplifies the ideals that both our nation and our movement hold dear.

I wish you and your families a safe, enjoyable, and adventure-filled summer.

Yours in Scouting!

Important Update

Let's grow Scouting together in our community!

The District Marketing and Communications Committee has recently launched new efforts to raise the visibility of Scouting in Hunterdon County. What we need from all of our units are photos and brief descriptions of events, activities, Courts of Honor, Eagle Projects etc. to share on the new Scouting Hunterdon County Facebook and Instagram pages.

Until we establish a central repository, photos and descriptions can be sent to ringoes65treasurer@gmail.com. Anytime you post for scouting, please be sure to tag #ScoutingHunterdon to increase our reach.

Our ultimate goal is to share the fun of scouting to those not involved and grow the scouting program in Hunterdon County. Questions and/or ideas can be sent to Kristen Boyce.

Advancement

Eagle Project Work Sessions are Troop Activities!

Summer is a popular time to schedule Eagle Scout service projects. It is always encouraging to see young people contribute to their communities by leading and participating in these Scout-led activities.

While the project itself must be planned and led by the Eagle Scout candidate, all project work sessions are considered unit activities. As such, the standard rules for safe troop activities must be followed.

This includes the Safeguarding Youth Two-Deep Leadership requirement: for each work session, there must be at least two registered adult leaders who are 21 years of age or older.

To emphasize this requirement, each Eagle Scout candidate in the Hunterdon Arrowheard District is asked to include the statement above in the Safety Issues section of the project proposal. Troop leaders should understand that approving an Eagle Scout project proposal signifies the unit leadership's commitment to providing this level of adult support for the anticipated work sessions and scheduled dates.

A New, Simpler Renewal Cycle for All Members

Scouting America announced an important change at the National Annual Meeting that will simplify the membership and unit renewal process nationwide.

By February 2028, all members and all units will have a single, common renewal month of February.

This change is in response to feedback from unit leaders and other Scouters who asked for a simpler, more consistent renewal experience. We appreciate and value their input.

Key updates include:

  • Beginning September 2026, all units due for renewal will renew to February 2028
  • All memberships and unit charters will have a common renewal month of February by February 2028

o To simplify the process and in response to unit leaders' requests, Scouting America is returning to unit control of member renewals. If the unit does not renew a member, that member may renew themselves after the unit-only period closes

  • The current 60-day grace period will end December 31, 2026

o Members renewing in November 2026 will still receive a 30-day grace period through December

o Members renewing in December 2026 must renew by December 31 to avoid being dropped

To support the transition during 2026:

  • Beginning in September 2026, new and renewing units will use the standard charter fee plus a monthly pro-rata fee through February 2028
  • No changes for new and renewing members through 2026

Additional information will be coming soon from Scouting America. This is a significant operational change designed to reduce complexity and create a more streamlined experience for volunteers, families, and councils alike.
