Stenberg Cup Golf &
Tennis Tournament Highlights

Astor's Executive Director/CEO Jim McGuirk with NFL stars Joe Morris & Jeff Feagles

We had a great time at the 20th Annual Stenberg Cup Golf Tournament & 3rd Annual Tennis Tournament on June 11. The weather was perfect and more than 100 people came out in support of Astor and enjoyed a round of golf or game of tennis.

Thanks to the Stenberg sisters, who have continued the legacy of their late parents, Astor has the opportunity to raise funds to support the great work that we do for children and families.

We were joined by special guests, NFL Super Bowl Stars & former Giants,  Joe Morris & Jeff Feagles.  Special thanks to our MC, Michelle Taylor from iHeart Radio.

Congratulations to David Gil, Ed Van Nostrand, Bob Shoemaker, and Gerrard Kelly from Professional Computer Associates for winning 1st Place in our golf tournament. And congratulations goes to Megan Ercole from Adam's Fairacre Farms who won  Longest Drive in the women's competition.

We are proud to announce that Astor's Learning Center (ALC) has been recognized as a NASET School of Excellence. The National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET)  award goes to qualified licensed private special education schools that have met exacting professional standards, plus shown exceptional dedication, commitment and achievement in special education. It is the highest level of recognition awarded by NASET.

"Children benefit from the important work of our knowledgeable and dedicated staff," said Mary Sontheimer, Astor's Assistant Executive Director, Education and Early Childhood Development Programs. "We are glad for this honor by NASET, which recognizes those efforts, and thankful for everyone that works hard on behalf of our children."

We had perfect weather for a  our annual Stenberg Cup Golf Tournament. We celebrated the 20th year of this special event held in the memory of Astor employee Shirley Stenberg and her husband Ronald. The couple's four daughters, Carol Brundle, Sharon Dunbar, Lisa Edgerton, and Lynne Silva were present in honor of the special occasion.
Thank you to everyone who came out in support of Astor at this great event.

We are very proud to announce that Astor has been recognized as a NASET School of Excellence and once again been awarded The Joint Commission's Gold Seal.  Our dedicated and committed staff work hard to ensure we meet the highest standards of care for the children and families we serve.

Children from the Lawrence F. Hickey Center in the Bronx spent a day at the Bronx Zoo admiring and petting animals in the Children's Zoo.  Click the link below for some great pictures of their trip.

Our hearts are heavy from the recent loss of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. We need to continue
the dialog and break the stigma about mental health. Learn the warning signs of crisis and suicide by following the link below to the National Suicide Hotline.

We thank you for your continued support.

There's no better way to end a school year than a trip to the Bronx Zoo! The children from Astor's Lawrence F. Hickey Center for Child Development  really loved feeding and petting the animals in the Children's Zoo. They were thrilled to see the tigers, bears and monkeys! They all had a wonderful time!

Notre Dame Club Garden Revitalization at Astor

The Notre Dame Club of the Mid-Hudson Valley generously revitalized garden areas on Astor's campus Rhinebeck.  The garden upgrade was part of the club's Hesburgh Month of Service which honors the 16th president of the University of Notre Dame, the Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., for his commitment to the pursuit of peace and promotion of human dignity.

Break the Stigma of Mental Health

The past month has been very difficult, losing two beloved public figures to suicide. The loss of designer Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain highlights the need to engage in greater conversation about mental health and the suicide crisis in the U.S.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Each year,  44,965 Americans die of suicide. If you or someone you know is in need, please reach out for help.
