Two very big summer events for those who are blind or visually impaired are the Annual Conventions of the American Foundation of the Blind (July 3-10) and the National Federation of the Blind (July 14-18). This year it will be easy for everyone to "attend" either or both conventions as due to Covid19, they are virtual via Zoom. You must pre-register and you will then receive information on general and specialty sessions and how to sign in. The cost for the AFB convention is $25.00 which includes as many sessions as you want to attend. There is no specified cost for the NFB convention, but a donation is requested. Both conventions will have a wealth of information relevant to the blind and visually impaired communities and it is strongly recommended that you take advantage of the opportunity to attend one or both right from home. For more information and to register; ACB convention website,  click here ; NFB convention website,  click here  .

MEMBER GET-TOGETHER
VIBES members will gather face-to-face (observing proper distancing) for the first time in four months on July 30 from 6:30-8:00 at Safety City. This will be a chance to socialize and hang out with each other.  Everyone is asked to bring their own chair and their own beverage.  Pre-packaged snacks will be provided. This is for members only.
 CALENDAR
Due to the Coronavirus, VIBES activities have taken on a different look. Many of our activities have been canceled or postponed but our member meetings continue. Out of respect for physical distancing and regard for everyone's health, meetings are being held via ZOOM.

WHAT IS NEW THIS MONTH ON OUR BLOG PAGE?

HOW I SPENT MY SPRING SOCIAL DISTANCING
With the sudden requirement that most of us stay home to avoid the Coronavirus, many of us had grand visions of tackling all of the projects and activities that we have postponed for years. Now we have time to do them!  Let's check and see how John is coming on his list of thing he had planned to do when he had the time.

VERONIIIICA WITH FOUR EYES
On a few occasions, John has posted blogs by Veronica Lewis who writes about life with low vision and the use of assistive technology.  Here are five of Veronica's blogs that John has selected that are particularly pertinent to members of Club VIBES. When you tap the click here link following each title, you will be taken to the article on either the Club VIBES website or to Veronica's website.

BOOKSHARE
by Illya

I didn't always use Bookshare, but that's only because I had no need for it until I started attending  Pellissippi State Community College. Bookshare is an e-book library that makes reading easier for people  with reading disabilities. It includes books for school, career and reading pleasure as well as titles in over  thirty-four languages. The library is supported by a dedicated volunteer community and partnerships  with over 820 US and international publishers. Continue reading
ATTEND NFB AND AFB ANNUAL CONVENTIONS
Both annual conventions are being held in a virtual format due to Covid19. This offers everyone a chance to attend without leaving home. In addition to those who are blind or visually impaired, these conventions are also relevant to parents, educators, employers, and anyone else connected to the blind and visually impaired community.

For more detailed information and how to register, see the Member section below.

WELCOME DAVID
Our newest board member is David Cass who was first introduced to Club VIBES when he accompanied his wife to a wine tasting fund raiser that we had at Pero's on the Hill. He discovered what a fun group we are and began volunteering as a pilot and doing other jobs as needed. Now David has an official role. In David's pwn words,
"Hello everyone, David Cass here. I am a native Knoxvillian (born-1957.) I attended Gibbs high school and have a long lineage of railroad engineers in my family so I tooted my own horn for 39 yrs. The best part as I began the train ride, Cyndy and I married in 1979. We enjoy 2 adult sons & 2 grandkids. Thanks to Cyndy, I was able to attend a Vibes/WBIR function. Thank you Vibes, for welcoming me! Such an " Essential Organization" that I am blessed to be a part of and I have a larger circle of friends today!

SPECIAL GUEST
We had a special visitor at our May board meeting. Because we were meeting from home via Zoom, baby Leila, daughter of VIBES treasurer, Cassie and her husband Jim dropped in for a short visit. We were enchanted watching Leila. We would have liked to have spent the entire meeting just watching her!
LEADERSHIP TEAM
A Leadership Team has been formed to help train the VIBES general membership to use ZOOM which will be the format for most VIBES activities during the days of the pandemic. The members of the team are Sue, Campbell, Illya, Jacoby, Tabitha and Vanessa. They range from high school to post-college and include low vision and blind members. The focus so far has been to master the use of Zoom in setting up and hosting meetings and to teach it to the general membership. In addition, members are being trained to host Zoom events. We are keeping ZOOM very busy and so far have had board meetings, leadership meetings and membership meetings. Plans are to add game nights, movie nights and just "hang-out" nights.

EXERCISING VIA ZOOM
One of the things Vibes members are missing is the chance for getting exercise. During the school year we have planned walks with Delta Gamma along with tandem bicycling. With these activities canceled due to the coronavirus, several of our members have found a creative solution. They are exercising together via Zoom using an app called Fit for Battle. It tells a story where participants " run while battling orcs, goblins and dragons".
LEARN SOMETHING NEW
NOW IS THE TIME TO LEARN NEW SKILLS
Whether you are a student, parent, or teacher now is the time to tackle those skills that you do not have time when you are busy with school. Computer skills are among the most important things a blind or visually impaired person needs to master. The computer is essential for completing assignments and accessing the internet as well as having the skills for employment upon completing school. Blind persons access the computer with a screen reader such as JAWS. Low vision persons use an enlarging program such as ZoomText. Both of these programs are quite expensive but due to the pandemic, Freedom Scientific has made both JAWS and ZoomText available free for a limited and their website has easy to follow tutorials where you can learn to use both of these programs.
The Freedom Scientific website has the information you need to get started at  https://www.freedomscientific.com

Freedom Scientific also has training videos on JAWS and ZoomText on YouTube.
MEMBERS CORNER
MEMBER MEETINGS
Most Vibes members have been trained in the use of Zoom by members of the Leadership Team. In addition, some members have also been trained in how to host a meeting. They can then use this skill to host meetings for VIBES and maybe even host meetings for other groups such as family or friends meetings. The member meetings using Zoom have been very successful but members are still looking forward to resuming face-to-face meetings.

STAYING FIT
VIBES members are very creative in inventing ways to keep in touch with each other during the quarantine.  They have had training so that everyone knows how to use Zoom and they use that format for general member meetings, leadership meetings, movie night, playing games, and to just "hang out".  Illya, Jacoby, and Campbell exercise together via Zoom using an app, "Fit for Battle".

TECH AND MEDIA
BLINDFOLD GAMES
Eleven popular games such as Sudoku, Solitaire, and Crazy Eights have been adapted for those without vision to play on the iPhone. They are fun to play and also help strengthen your auditory skills. More information about the games that are offered is at the Easter Seals Adaptive Technology site.  Click here . After you decide which games you want, you can download them from the App Store. If you search for Blindfold games, you will get the entire selection of about eighty  games. You can also search for those games listed in this article individually by entering the name in the search box. The games are free.
