As we begin a new academic year, I am delighted to welcome the Class of 2030 to Rowan-Virtua SOM. Orientation marks the beginning of an exciting journey for our newest student doctors, and we look forward to celebrating this important milestone together during the White Coat Ceremony on August 7.
The start of a new academic year always brings renewed opportunities for learning, discovery and collaboration. I look forward to seeing all that our students, faculty and staff will accomplish in the months ahead and wish everyone a successful year.

Rowan-Virtua SOM and Virtua Health Earn Joint Accreditation with Commendation
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine and Virtua Health have earned Joint Accreditation with Commendation as a provider of continuing education for the healthcare team, a distinction awarded by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
The six-year accreditation, which extends through July 2032, recognizes the strength of the organizations' collaboration and their shared commitment to advancing interprofessional continuing education. Nationally, only 48 organizations have achieved Joint Accreditation with Commendation, placing Rowan-Virtua SOM and Virtua Health among a select group of institutions recognized for excellence in lifelong learning and healthcare education.

Dr. James Martin Awarded Rowan University's Innovations in Teaching Using Technology Grant
Dr. James Martin has been selected as the recipient of the Faculty Center's 2026 Innovations in Teaching Using Technology Grant for his project, "Bridging the Acoustic-Electrical Gap: Integrating 3-Lead ECG and Digital Auscultation in Pre-Clerkship Cardiovascular Education."

Mobile Hygiene and Wellness Services Supports Community Health
On July 23, the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine and the Rowan College of South Jersey Mobile Recovery Van continued their mission of serving the community through Mobile Hygiene and Wellness Services in Turnersville. The program provides access to showers, restroom facilities and laundry services to help restore dignity, promote health and address social determinants of health. The initiative also welcomed Gloucester County Commissioner Jim Jefferson, whose visit highlighted the county’s continued support of the program and its impact on the community.

Rowan-Virtua SOM Physician Assistant Program Earns Accreditation-Provisional Status
The Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Physician Assistant Program has been granted Accreditation-Provisional status by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), a significant milestone that authorizes the program to begin enrolling students.
The accreditation confirms the program has met the national standards required to educate future physician assistants and ensures graduates will be eligible to sit for the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE). Notably, the ARC-PA identified no areas of noncompliance or commission observations during its review, reflecting the program's strong foundation. The inaugural class of PA students is expected to begin this fall.

SOM Welcomes Class of 2030 at Orientation
Rowan-Virtua SOM’s new first-year medical students were officially welcomed to campus with a weeklong orientation program July 13-17!
The 292 class members participated in a variety of activities, including educational programs, small group information sessions, a basic life support and CPR certification course, breakfast and lunch socials, and a welcome back BBQ. All activities were designed to not only give students a sense of the campus, the community and expectations for a successful medical school experience, but also to provide opportunities to meet fellow students, in addition to faculty and staff.
The Class of 2030 includes a diverse group of the best and brightest from across the state and the country; here are some quick facts:
- 55 percent female
- 49 percent of students are from New Jersey, with 11 percent who call South Jersey home
- Largest cohort of international students, with 42 international students representing five different countries.
In August, we look forward to celebrating the members of the Class of 2030 and officially welcoming them into the osteopathic medical profession at their White Coat Ceremony.

Create Your Own Notebook
Student doctors on both campuses kicked off the new academic year with a creative wellness activity by designing personalized notebooks. Whether used as a journal, planner, fitness tracker, or place for notes, each notebook reflects the students’ goals, motivation, and excitement for the year ahead.

Big/Little Meetup
Students gathered in Stratford on July 21 for the Big/Little Meetup, an afternoon filled with connection, conversation, and fun. Bigs shared valuable advice on navigating the challenges of medical school while Littles had the opportunity to ask questions, build relationships, and learn from their peers. Attendees enjoyed delicious snacks, Mister Softee, Kona Ice, and board games, making it a memorable opportunity to strengthen connections and celebrate the beginning of the academic year together.

Admissions Hosts Rowan University Ascend Program
The SOM Admissions Office hosted the Rowan University Ascend Program, welcoming approximately 20 incoming Rowan University freshmen to the School of Osteopathic Medicine for a four-day experience featuring clinical and lecture-based activities. Ascend is part of Rowan University's Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program and provides students interested in healthcare careers with an introduction to medical education.

Mister Softee Ice Cream Truck Visits SOM
Faculty and staff enjoyed a sweet summer treat when the Mister Softee ice cream truck visited the Stratford campus on July 9. The event provided an opportunity for colleagues to connect and cool off with ice cream. A visit to the Sewell campus is also planned, with the date to be announced.
