"My mentor has been really helpful to my achievements since I met him. His tremendous help was vital to what I consider success at the SHPE conference. He has gone above and beyond and I'm very thankful to have met him. We talk just about every week, where I constantly keep learning from him...thank you for this amazing program." — SHPE Mentee

Summer time: A Chance to Reflect on the Past and Build for the Future

Undergraduates if you are interested in graduate school or research use the summer to work on your application materials like finding your voice for a unique and powerful personal statement, working in a lab to build your research repertoire, connecting with faculty or researchers to obtain  strong recommendation letters, and using resources like apps and books to prepare for the GRE (hyperlink: https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/prepare/ ). If you're not quite at the grad program application stage, take this time to ask as many questions as you can, don't be shy and get to know labs and researchers. Pick your coming courses strategically to get more time with particular faculty members or explore a field you think you'd like to pursue. For the coming academic years and summers plan to do research either offered at your institution or through programs like the NSF REU (hyperlink: https://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/index.jsp) .

Let the summer rejuvenate you and catapult you into a successful academic year and beyond. And as always, work with your SHPE familia and think of new ways you can lift each other up.
