Meeting Recap
The NLLD Board of Commissioners conducted its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 16, 2020.
Below are updates on NLLD levee and drainage projects presented at the meeting.
Thibodaux-Lockport-Bayou Blue Project Area:
US 90 at Bayou Folse
The levee sections between and under the bridges over Bayou Folse on U.S. Highway 90 were considerably lower than the adjacent earthen levees on either side of the bridges. Because of this, the Levee District installed “temporary” HESCO bags and steel plates under the bridges in 2008 in response to a threat posed by Hurricane Ike.

The most cost-effective permanent solution is to build up the height of the levee around the bridges on both sides of U.S. 90 and on both sides of Bayou Folse. This $1.8 million project is now underway with Byron E. Talbot Contractor, Inc. as contractor. (PICTURED ABOVE)

Workers have backfilled the channel and installed culverts. (PICTURED BELOW)

In advance of the recent heavy rain events, this system was open and flowing to both pump stations in the area. As shown in the photos, the contractor is also beginning to build up the height of the levee around the bridges.
Lockport-Larose Project Area:
Lockport to Larose Reach B Levee Project
Outer Limits Contractors, LLC is quickly working to replace a culvert in a section of the Reach B levee that was beginning to wash out. (PICTURED ABOVE) The failing culvert was removed and the drainage was blocked to provide continuity of flood protection in the area. This replacement culvert work is proceeding well with a month left to completion.

NLLD is also working with Picciola and Associates, Inc. to plan improvements to the overall Reach B Levee. These improvements will be in three phases with a project cost estimated at $2.3 million. Currently, Picciola and Associates, Inc. is working on revising the permit for the project
