End of Year Laptop Collections

As the NSS Technology Department prepares for our fourth year of one-to-one computing, they will use summer break to ensure students have updated and properly functioning devices.

We will be collecting all students’ devices before the end of the school year. Students entering Grades 5 and 9 will receive a new device at NPS and NHS in September at a date to be determined. In grades 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12, devices will be returned to students updated, repaired, and re-imaged with the latest version of the appropriate operating system at the beginning of next school year.

To assist with this, students are responsible for the following:
  1. Saving any local files (Documents, Desktop, Downloads, etc) to Google Drive. All local data on the school devices will be permanently deleted during the service period. All data stored within PowerSchool Learning, Google Apps (Drive, Docs, etc) and all other cloud-based services will be preserved.
  2. Turning in their laptops and chargers at the end of the school year in the school library at a time designated by their teachers.

Seniors have the option to purchase their current NHS laptop for $75.00. If you have any questions, please contact Derek Emery (demery@nssk12.org).
Narragansett Educator Highlight

Each month, we are happy to share a little more about one of our educators here at our schools. We hope this will help better connect you with the wonderful individuals who work hard to give our students the best experience each year, while learning fun facts about them.
Michelle Haskell, NES First Grade Teacher

How long have you been working within the Narragansett School System and what do you do?
This is my first year with Narragansett School System! I am a 1st grade teacher. I am so excited to be back next year and to continue my teaching journey at NES!

Where are you originally from?
I am from Westerly, RI and was brought to this community when starting my college career at The University of Rhode Island. I lived in Narragansett for about 5 years and fell in love with the area. Needless to say, I am blessed to now be able to say I am a working member of this wonderful community of teachers, families and students.

What is your favorite part about working at your school?
My favorite part about working at NES is the amount of support I have had during my first year as a classroom teacher. Everywhere you turn, there is always someone who is willing to give a helping hand. I have felt extremely welcomed into the NES family and have received an overwhelming amount of love, support and feedback from my colleagues. Already through my first year at NES, I know that I have gained life-long friends.

Do you have any talents or hobbies outside of the school day or during the summer that you like to enjoy?
I enjoy doing dance, yoga, hiking, reading, going to the beach, and playing my ukulele!

What is one thing that your students and staff may not know about you!
I danced for over 15 years consecutively! This included tap, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, pointe, lyrical and contemporary. Prior to deciding on my career choice as a teacher, I was going to attend a performing arts school and work toward a degree in dance. Although I went down a different path (which I am so happy I did,) I hope to someday in the future teach some dance classes part-time, outside of teaching. I still take dance classes now, but mostly just for fun!

Great Season for Girls on the Run

The Narragansett Elementary School had a wonderful spring season of the Girls on the Run program! This program began in February and met Mondays and Wednesdays after school. It ended with a celebratory 5K on Monday, May 20th at Colt State Park in Bristol, RI.

The program is meant to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. It proved that over time, our NES participants started making connections, growing, and becoming stronger runners. The final event was a hit, despite the rain!

From all of us coaches, thank you for such a great season.
NES Fundraiser Reaches Goal!

On May 22, the long awaited PTO Fun Run took place. This event, which was the finale of a week long of fundraising, was hosted in collaboration with Boosterthon. This organization helps schools use fun ways to raise funds.

We're excited to share that Narragansett Elementary School's fundraiser goal of $10,000 was reached with a total of more than $11,500! These funds will directly benefit field trips next year.

This was the first Fun Run hosted at the school and a special promise was made by Principal Gail Dandurand. She pledged that if the goal was reached, she would make smoothies for all the students on a smoothie bike, which she did the next week!

Thank you to all who helped us reach our goal.
End Of Year NES Concert

On May 30th, our talented NES musicians performed a wonderful concert for the community in the gymnasium.

Thank you to NES Music Teacher Molly Hammell for leading our band and chorus students and instructing them over this past year. Thank you also to Brien Jennings, NES Library Media Specialist for capturing this wonderful event. Everyone had a great time!
ECO Day Brings Nature To NES

On June 1st, NES students had a wonderful opportunity to immerse themselves in nature and learn more about our New England environment during Eco-Day. This event was held in the NES Garden and gave students the chance to explore activities like touch and learn and interactive presentations. We loved watching our student body engage and ask some great questions throughout the afternoon!

A special thanks to our education presenters from around the state including: Audubon Society of RI, Born to be Wild, Project CHICK (Casey Farm,) Farm Fresh RI, Friends of Canonchet Farm, Joyce’s Jungle, NEC Solar, Poblano Farms, Rhodeside Revival, RI Vegan Awareness, RIRRC, Save the Bay, South Ferry Pharm, URI Master Gardeners. Also, we thank local musicians DudeManBro, Matt Smith, and Devin Bender for performing during our event!
NES Art Show a Success!

On Thursday, May 23rd, NES hosted their annual student art show in the NES cafeteria!

Grade levels K-4 had their artwork displayed, matted, and framed. The school-wide theme of this year’s art show was collage.

The community that came out to support the students at this event shared they had a great time as they viewed the impressive artwork. NES would like to thank the volunteers, the staff, and all the talented students who made this show a great success.

Escape Room Activity for NPS Students!

As the end of the year nears, NPS students in the 5th, 6th and 7th grade had a fun opportunity to take part in an "Escape Room" themed activity right in their own library!

This was fittingly tied in with reading mysteries. During the activity, students then had to follow the clues to open the locks on boxes to solve the final mystery.

Thanks to the creativity of librarian Joan Mouradjian and to the Narragansett Education Foundation's grant for additional programs, this interactive way of problem-solving was made possible.
Mariner March Fundraiser is TOMORROW

This year the PBIS, ( Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports,) committee is happy to announce that a new and improved Mariner March Fundraiser will take place during the school day TOMORROW from 9:00am to approximately 10:30am

Students in the 5th, 6th and 7th grades will be led by the NPS Marching Band and will walk around the the NPS/NHS campus in honor of Grace Reddington. We will encourage everyone to wear purple, her favorite color. Once the event has concluded, NPS students will gather on the NHS athletic field bleachers, where PBIS staff and student leaders will provide Popsicle's to all the participating students.

The suggested donation is $1.00 per student. Parents, staff and community members can contribute any tax-deductible donation where a portion of the proceeds will go toward a tribute gift to Rettsyndrome.org in memory of Grace.   NPS will also be collecting donations throughout the summer that will be sent to the organization in the fall to benefit research.

If you or any family members would like to make a personal or business donation, please contact NPS Asst. Principal, Brian Tetreault btetreault@nssk12.org or through the email button below.
Something to 'Walk' About

Last month, NPS Nurse, Margaret Fair, had the opportunity to work with a URI nursing student, Amanda George, during her semester on a project centered around the health needs of our students and the link to increased physical activity and its importance to health.

She identified NPS 5th graders as the target population, designed a brochure about walking and developed a presentation to give to two classes in May about the project. She was also able to utilize pedometers that NPS had from a recent donation from the 5021 program.

After students received their brochure and pedometer, they were able to start using them with a goal to encourage students and their families to increase their physical activity and enjoy the outdoors.

Thank you to Amanda, our NPS Nurse Margaret Fair, and the community for helping make this project possible!
Yoga Added to 6th Grade P.E.

We are excited to share that 6th graders will now have access all school year long to yoga as the Pier School has added it to the physical education curriculum if students wish to take part.

It will be offered one day a week and was created due to the success of the temporary yoga program students took part in over the past year.

We look forward to offering students this additional way to utilize exercise and mindfulness throughout the day.
NPS Enrichment Night

On Thursday, June 6th, NPS 5th and 6th grade enrichment students presented their Genius Hour projects to a packed crowd of siblings, parents and teachers.

These students have been working all year during SOAR on a research project of choice. Their personalities shined brightly as they gave their 5-minute TED-style talks about their research and shared what they've created, planned, produced or organized to go along with it.

Great job by all of our hard working students!
Successful 2019 Career Day

On June 5th, NPS hosted its annual Career Day to help students learn more about the many fields and occupations in the world, especially right here in Rhode Island.

More than 25 professionals from around the state attended and shared their knowledge and journey with our students.

Thank you to our faculty, staff, and speakers for helping give our students even more guidance as they learn about the opportunities in our community.
NPS Beach Clean-Up

On Friday, June 7th, students conducted an after school Beach Clean-Up at Narragansett Beach as part of 6th grader Eliana Sahagian's Genius Hour project for Enrichment.

Eliana shared, "I am doing this beach clean up because my enrichment project is the coral reefs and my research made me want to help the living things in the coral reefs and all life in the ocean.”

We love when we see students using projects to positively impact the community!

NHS Student Helps Beautify Art Museum

The teens were tasked with designing something that would build the school’s visibility, connect it to the Museum, and give it a contemporary look that fits in with the historic context of Newport.
