San Mateo and San Francisco Counties

4-H

San Mateo /San Francisco County 4-H Clubs!

We kicked off April with Life Skills Day, where youth proudly showcased the many items they’ve created throughout the project year. A standout entry? A spectacular, hand-sewn octopus stretching over five feet long! Dedicated adult volunteers served as evaluators, providing valuable feedback and encouragement to every participant.

Also at Life Skills Day, we hosted Fashion Revue, Snack Attack, and the Healthy Lunch Challenge. From transforming thrifted clothing into stylish ensembles to crafting creative snacks and nutritious lunch ideas, our youth impressed at every turn. Those earning gold in Fashion Revue qualified to compete at State Field Day on May 17 at UC Davis—an exciting achievement!

Now, we’re in full swing with the San Mateo County Fair, and the beloved 4-H Cake Booth has made its return! Clubs came together to bake delicious cakes in commercial kitchens, and each took turns running the booth. Proceeds will go back to the clubs at the end of the Fair. The youth have had a blast selling their cakes and connecting with the community. On Sunday, we wrapped up the Rabbit Show, and every participant did a fantastic job presenting their animals with pride and professionalism.

As the project year winds down we're looking forward to finishing strong with 4-H Camp at the end of July - this year's theme: Camp Shrek!!

Youth Development Sponsored Projects

4-H Water Wizards

This school year the 4-H Water Wizards Program taught over 75 elementary students about water, soil and ecological science. Youth from five sites of the Boys and Girls Club Programs also got to participate in a field trip to Elkus Ranch and work on a community service-learning project they designed.

Phoenix Garden...volunteers were busy bees this spring hosting multiple events focused on youth, community and healing. The five events in April and May attracted over 175 volunteers for activities like a Master Gardener Citrus Preservation workshop, high school youth workdays, celebration of Compost week and teaching mindful garden practices like yoga for Mental Health Awareness month.

Master Food Preservers

Come see us at the County Fair!

The UC Master Food Preservers of San Mateo and San Francisco Counties are at the San Mateo County Fair through June 8! MFP volunteers participated in judging over 30 delicious and creative entries in the Preserved Foods category this year. During the fair, we are hosting an MFP info table where you can learn more about our program and ask food preservation and food safety questions. We will also be giving demonstrations on making tasty jams and savory quick pickles during the week so check the fair schedule if you want to see us.

If you miss us at the fair, be sure to catch our next online workshop featuring peaches, plums and ways to preserve your favorite stone fruits: June 10, 4pm.

Master Gardeners

2025 Spring Garden Market

Over 700 people attended this year’s Spring Garden Market at the San Mateo County Event Center on the morning of April 19, almost half of whom arrived within the first hour of opening. These eager patrons were able to select from a large variety of tomatoes, peppers, squash and other edible plants, as well as California native plants, pollinators and succulents.

This event is the largest fund-raising event for the San Francisco and San Mateo Counties Master Gardener program. The funds support our many educational programs and the event itself is a wonderful learning opportunity for customers with the multitude of informational tables and the chance to ask Master Gardeners their questions directly.  Although in a smaller hall than previous years, this event felt more vibrant and full - a testament to the organizers and volunteer staff. We also successfully implemented a new credit card payment system which was greatly appreciated by all.

We sold over 2000 tomato plants, hundreds of peppers, herbs, squash and eggplant, over 600 pollinators and over 400 California Natives. All told almost 5000 plants were sold. Based on client questionnaires it is clear that increasing the varieties of peppers we offer would be appreciated and will be considered for next year.

Nutrition

CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE

As we close out the school year, CalFresh Healthy Living UCCE San Mateo/San Francisco reflects on a season of meaningful engagement, hands-on learning, and strengthened partnerships. Our work across classrooms, gardens, and community spaces has continued to support youth and families in building lifelong healthy habits.

This spring, our team has focused on expanding nutrition education through culturally relevant, skills-based lessons. The Food Smarts for Kids curriculum from Leah’s Pantry has been a key tool, complemented by tailored approaches that meet each school’s unique needs. In tandem, our garden-based education has continued to thrive—Susan B Anthony Elementary in Daly City (pictured here) has become a hub for interactive learning and student leadership. Our use of the Teams with Intergenerational Support (TWIGS) curriculum has evolved to incorporate more co-teaching opportunities, fostering deeper youth participation.

In early learning environments, we’ve sustained our commitment to age-appropriate healthy living education. Children at ECE center, and often their caregivers, have explored healthy eating through the Glow, Go, and Grow framework, while Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) activities have encouraged structured movement. In community-based settings, we’ve also brought the Plan, Shop, Save, and Cook curriculum to adult learners, supporting practical food budgeting and meal planning strategies.

Beyond the classroom, our team continues to champion policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) improvements. This quarter, we’ve supported school cafeterias with local produce taste tests and visual promotion strategies informed by the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement. We’ve also begun offering support around School Wellness Policies, helping institutions align practices with long-term health goals.

Looking ahead to summer, we’re excited to shift toward out-of-school programming through partnerships with camps, summer schools, family centers, and local health fairs. These settings allow us to reach a broader audience while maintaining our focus on engaging, practical, and inclusive wellness education.

Thank you to our dedicated partners, educators, families, and community members for making this school year so rewarding. We look forward to a vibrant summer season of continued collaboration and impact.
