SUN FLIGHT STATS
SUN 2022 PASSENGER TRAFFIC HELD STRONG FOR WINTER

The January-April winter period at SUN had strong passenger numbers:
  • 84% average load factor
  • 37% increase in passenger enplanements
WINTER FLIGHT RELIABILITY NOW AT 95%
WHAT A DIFFERENCE TECHNOLOGY MAKES
The new approach procedure implemented at SUN in December 2020 by SkyWest Airlines for the Delta and United flights it operates has contributed to another winter of very few weather diverted flights.

While we didn't have a lot of snow this season after December, we still had many days when the weather/visibility was bad enough that flights would have been diverted in the past. But thanks to this new technology, we had another season of nearly 95% flight reliability - WOW! What a great improvement!

The airport staff has been tracking the results, and has reported that over the past two winters, 183 inbound flights were "saved" - flights that would have been diverted in the past, but were now able to fly into SUN instead.

That likely means upwards of 10,000 passengers were saved from being bused to/from SUN over the last two winters! Good news indeed!

The airport is has reopened!
So, what exactly was going on at the airport during the 30 day closure???

DID YOU KNOW?

Many people don't realize that commercial airline operations (the Delta, Alaska and United flights) make up only a small % of the total airport operations (takeoffs and landings) at SUN. The rest is General Aviation (GA, ie, private planes) along with "Other" operations like air ambulance, charter and military.

In 2021, there were 29,102 total operations at SUN; 4,239 were commercial (14%), and 24,829 were GA/Other (86%). It's important to note that the aircraft used now for commercial operations are larger, quieter regional jets that hold 70-76 passengers, twice the amount that the old 30 passenger Brasilia turbo props planes held which were previously flown by SkyWest for Delta.

In general, airport operations have averaged about 27,000 annual takeoffs and landings over the past 10 years, but down approximately -55% in the last 20 years... Of course there are still peak periods at the airport when it is very busy with air traffic - peak holiday periods, Allen & Co, etc.
