“The Discovery Labs,” which is now one of the largest life science clusters in the greater Philadelphia region was created by MLP Ventures Group (MLP). A crucial part of the regional cell and gene therapy ecosystem, ESI assisted MLP in conducting an economic impact analysis of The Discovery Labs.

As a firm, we benefit from the setting in which we are located, the shopping options and public amenities, as well as street life that we can access here. In turn, we benefit the setting by being physically present, for it's our eyes and ears and dollars that help make the city a more vibrant location to live and work.

Richard Voith presented a keynote speech at Investing in Infrastructure, presented by the Philadelphia Business Journal on June 8. A panel session followed and included Yassmin Gramian (PennDOT), Kelly Knutson (Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed), Leslie Richards (SEPTA), Barry Seymour (DVRPC), and Brian Traylor (Amtrak).

Steve Wray will be on hand presenting ESI's research on the economic value and benefits of preserved open space in Mercer County at the New Jersey Planning & Redevelopment Conference. The panel, which includes Elanor V. Horne (Lawrence Hopewell Trail Corporation), John S. Watson, Jr. (New Jersey Conservation Foundation), and Leslie R. Floyd (Mercer County Planning Department), will look at the study findings through an equity lens.

Senior Advisor Greg Byrnes, Executive Director of the New Mexico Biotechnology and Biomedical Association (NMBio) will be hosting a New Mexico Pavilion at the BIO International Convention in San Diego, June 13-16. NMBio will be showcasing several of the state’s most promising bioscience startups in addition to promoting the research taking place at Los Alamos National Labs, Sandia National Labs and the state’s major universities to the anticipated 17,000 attendees from more than 70 countries.

Update from the Center
The conversation of cybersecurity and it's critical impacts is something that is becoming increasingly important, especially with the onset of smart cities. No longer are just firms being targeted in cyber attacks, but so are cities with the amount of technology that is implemented into their infrastructures. In the latest ESI Present Value blog post, ESI Intern Caleb Cavazos takes a more in-depth look into this topic of cybersecurity and smart cities, examining proposed steps cities can take to protect against cyberattacks that can hold services and systems hostage.

The Fairmount Park Conservancy, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, and the Friends of FDR, are making headway on implementation of the FDR Park Plan. Fairmount Park Conservancy is guiding completion of the new Welcome Center for FDR Park, which will include enhancements for climate resiliency. This will be the first of three projects for the FDR Park Plan's Gateway Phase.
