FEEDING SAN DIEGO IS HOSTING 26 DISTRIBUTION SITES FOR CHILDREN FACING HUNGER THIS SUMMER

This summer,  Feeding San Diego  is hosting 26 distribution sites for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), a critical part of its summer hunger-relief programs. This program provides critical support throughout the summer months to ensure children are getting the nutrition they need to grow and thrive.

In San Diego County, over 120,000 children face hunger and many lose access to nutritious school meals over the summer months when school is out. Feeding San Diego is working to fill that gap by offering these free summer meals and snacks to any children between one and 18 who participate. There are no forms to fill out in order to receive food.

CALFRESH BENEFITS NOW AVAILABLE TO SENIORS AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

As of June 1, 2019, 700,000 Californians are now eligible for CalFresh (nationally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) for the first time. For the last 45 years, individuals receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) lacked the opportunity to apply for CalFresh benefits, but a new state law has ended that prohibition. The majority people receiving SSI are adults 60 and older or people living with disabilities. Feeding San Diego is working with partner organizations throughout the county to get the word out to SSI recipients that may now be eligible for CalFresh benefits with no loss of SSI income.

AMERICA HAS A HUNGER PROBLEM

"We’ve all experienced hunger — that gnawing reminder to eat. But for the 40 million Americans, including more than 12 million children, who live with food insecurity, the sensation isn’t temporary or easily satiated. It is persistent, pernicious, and damages everything it touches, from behavior and brain chemistry to physical health and societal infrastructure. This is how hunger threatens our minds, our bodies, and our communities."
