We are pleased to announce our 2026 Production Workshop fellows, Lexi, Delaney, Annette, Anqa, Saba, Cleopatra Jach, Morgan, (front row) Alexis, and Claire. The TWN Production Workshop is a focused six-month initiative supporting aspiring filmmakers who are committed to social justice media.

While we welcome our workshop fellows, we also celebrate broader community achievements. Congratulations go to documentary filmmaker Sam Pollard, recipient of the Documentary Emmys Lifetime Achievement Award. Workshop graduates continue to succeed: Renee Tajima-Peña recently joined the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Documentary Silver Circle; Karla Murthy's documentary, "The Gas Station Attendant," will open in theaters on June 12; and viewers can stream Kimi Takasue's films on The Criterion Channel. Meanwhile, current workshop fellow Annette Cho presents her documentary project at the Brooklyn Film Festival Short Doc Pitch Competition on June 3.

This month, films from the Third World Newsreel catalog will be showcased at film festivals and art-house cinemas in the United States and abroad. The newly restored "A Litany for Survival" will premiere in Chicago, San Francisco, and Cleveland. Our African Spiritualities series continues with a screening of Al Santana's "Voices of the Gods" at the SNF Parkway Theater in Baltimore. The Newsreel Retrospective (1968-1972) continues with recent and upcoming screenings in London and Madrid. List of Resources and Deadlines

The New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) is a major funder of the arts in the state, supporting film, dance, photography, writing, and more. They give a flat $10,000 to selected artists each year who must be NYS residents, present at least one public event about their project during the funding year, and have a project to propose. The grant is awarded to the artist, not the project.

Individuals cannot apply directly – you must apply through an eligible non-profit organization that also approves your project. TWN is an eligible sponsor. To apply through TWN, follow these steps and get started now:

• If you applied to NYSCA last year, regardless of the outcome, you are not eligible to reapply this year. However, if you last applied two years ago, you may apply again
• Read the NYSCA guidelines
• Submit proof of NYS residency
• Read the TWN mission
• Email fiscal.twn@gmail.com by June 11

You’ll receive a questionnaire for TWN’s review. If approved for sponsorship, submit your proposal and materials by June 24. TWN will then submit your application to NYSCA. This is a fairly short turnaround - but this may also be the simplest grant proposal you will encounter, so it's worth the effort to try.
