Summer interns have arrived

Year after year, around a dozen students arrive in late May and early June from universities and law schools around the country. One appealing aspect of clerking at Ankin Law for students is the opportunity to explore several practice areas. Law clerks can assist an attorney in workers' compensation, personal injury, or medical malpractice. After a recent lunch and Q&A with Howard Ankin, clerks were given their summer assignments.

Social Media Addiction Lawsuits: A Brief Overview

Courts across the United States are now addressing lawsuits alleging that major social media

platforms were intentionally designed to be addictive and caused serious mental health harm —

particularly to children and teenagers. The cases are often compared to earlier tobacco litigation because they focus on whether companies engineered products to maximize use despite known risks.

The lawsuits claim platforms used features such as infinite scrolling, algorithmic content

recommendations, and persistent notifications to encourage compulsive engagement.

In other words, platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and others use features that

effectively create an atmosphere that prevents one from just stopping.

Typical Case Criteria

While each claim depends on individual facts, courts generally evaluate cases involving young users

who meet the following factors:

• Began using the platform before age 18

• 18• 25 years old or younger at the time suit is filed

• High-volume use, commonly averaging 3 or more hours per day

Documented medical or psychological harm showing serious injury, such as:

• Depression or severe anxiety

• Eating disorders

• Self-harm or suicidal ideation

• Loss of money

• Body image disorders

Evidence frequently includes app usage data, treatment records, and documented behavioral changes.

From sports law to personal injury:

Attorney Chris Garrett's path to Ankin Law

Growing up, sports were a major part of Chris Garrett’s life. He played multiple sports and continued his baseball career at Illinois Benedictine University.

But his path changed in law school. While studying at UIC Law, Chris discovered a passion for personal injury law. After a two-year stint at a small plaintiff firm, Chris joined Ankin Law in January 2018. Since then,
he has risen to partner and expanded his practice to include medical malpractice cases. The lessons he learned in baseball still guide

him today in the practice of law.

Legal options for truck drivers

In many cases, truck drivers injured in truck accidents face complicated legal questions about liability, workers’ compensation, and third-party claims. Understanding the legal options available after a crash can help injured drivers protect their financial future.

Commercial truck drivers spend thousands of hours on the road every year, often navigating congested highways and tight delivery schedules. While professional training and experience help reduce risks, truck accidents remain a serious concern across the transportation industry. These incidents can involve passenger vehicles, hazardous road conditions, or even other commercial trucks.

Truck Drivers Face Unique Risks on the Road

Long hours behind the wheel, unpredictable traffic conditions, and tight delivery deadlines can increase the likelihood of accidents. Truck drivers injured in truck accidents may experience a wide range of injuries, including back injuries, head trauma, fractures, and soft tissue damage. Because driving is physically demanding, even moderate injuries can make it difficult for a driver to return to work quickly.

Crashes involving large commercial vehicles can also involve multiple vehicles and significant property damage. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, large trucks are involved in thousands of injury crashes every year, highlighting the ongoing risks within the industry. In some situations, truck drivers injured in truck accidents may have the right to pursue claims against parties other than their employer.

For example, if a truck driver is hit by another commercial vehicle operated by a different company, that company may be held responsible for the crash. This type of legal action is known as a third-party claim.

Third-party claims may also arise if an accident involves:

A negligent passenger vehicle driver
A defective truck component
Improperly loaded cargo
Unsafe roadway conditions caused by contractors

2026 All-Staff Group Photos and Summer Party

On May 28th, attorneys and staff numbering nearly 90 met in the Nichols Suite of the modern wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. Photos of our entire staff, practice areas, intake, and tech team were taken, along with new headshots for our website. By day, our team is spread across three floors at 10 North Dearborn Street, so this event provided a rare and valuable time for everyone to be together.
