KWRCC Board of Directors Meeting

Tuesday, June 25 at 6pm. Guests Are Welcome | Contact Us to attend

Thank you Credit Union 1! (Facebook Post).jpg

This year, CU1 has chosen KWRCC as their Leading Change Partner. They held a silent auction for KWRCC at their Member Appreciation Day. The whole community of Kodiak was so generous- both the businesses that donated items for the auction and the people who bid on them. Furthermore, CU1 promised to match the proceeds from the auction up to $10,000.

We are blown away by the love and support from CU1 and our community!

Domestic Violence in the LGBTQ+ Community

from verywellmind.com

When we think about partner abuse, the image that comes to mind is of a man physically harming a woman. Intimate partner violence can be very different from that common vision of it, though. Domestic violence can cause a victim incredible, long-lasting harm even if they are never touched physically. And while the image we hold of an abuser is usually a man who hurts a woman, any person can be an abuser.

Partner violence within LGBTQ+ relationships occurs as often, if not more often, than in heterosexual relationships.

There is much less research available about partner violence in LGBTQ+ relationships than domestic violence in heterosexual relationships. In fact, research in this area is so underfunded that many sites reference a single study from 2010 (cited above) because there are so few studies completed on the subject. What those studies have found, though, is staggering.

Read on to learn how prevalent partner violence is in queer relationships, why people don't report abuse, the long-term mental and physical health effects of domestic violence, and how to find help if you're a victim.

Abuse in Immigrant Communities

from thehotline.org

Immigrant and non-immigrant communities experience domestic violence at similar rates, but individuals without citizenship status or other forms of documentation may face heightened risks as a result of factors like language, social isolation, lack of information or financial resources, cultural beliefs, or fear of deportation.

Immigrant survivors often choose not to report incidents of abuse out of fear of immigration consequences; immigration status may interfere with their ability to access support services as well.

A Father’s Day Reflection on Masculinity

from medium.com

On Father’s Day, like so many, I always reflect on my upbringing and thank my dad for what he gave me. A military veteran, he has always been a strong, safe, supportive male role model who treated me and my siblings the same and held us accountable to the same high standards, regardless of our gender. On weekends, we chose whether we wanted to help with the chores inside or mow the lawn. Our academic, athletic and other pursuits were encouraged equally. I grew up with a positive view of masculinity and a sense that I wasn’t at a disadvantage because of my gender. I didn’t learn until I was older that that perspective is one that is unfortunately not at all universal.
