Alcohol Ink on Treated Canvas

In this class, you will be painting on Treated Canvas. You'll learn the basic terms, equipment, and techniques for using alcohol inks -- through both demonstration and hands-on practice.
Alcohol ink art offers a dreamy blend of pigments and texture. Free of acid and highly versatile on non-porous surfaces, alcohol inks dry quickly and produce vivid, translucent color. Artists use this fluid medium to craft everything from serene, airy abstracts to bold, expressive patterns. Whether you’re drawn to soft gradients or vibrant swirls, alcohol ink art helps define the mood of your space. Learn how to preserve the medium’s fluid texture and luminous color transitions.
We will play with the inks to understand how they move with different pigments. You will create a large Canvas painting. At the end of class, you will be proud to hang your painting on the wall.

Calligraphy Workshop for Beginners

Whether you're a stationary nerd, DIY bride-to-be, or just a crafty individual, you'll be introduced to modern calligraphy with a pointed dip pen and ink in this workshop. We will cover all the basics and prepare you to add those unique lettered details to your snail mail, wedding paper goods, home decor, and more! The perfect night out!
Class includes 2-hours of instruction and demonstration, our beginner's calligraphy kit (two nibs, black ink pot, 2 letter guides, tracing paper, and straight pen holder), and all materials to write on. Everything is yours to keep at the end of the workshop!

Scratchboard Workshop

A Fun Filled Day of Scratching!
This 6-hour one-day workshop will provide an introduction to scratchboard materials, tools and techniques. We will explore scratchboard mark-making methods using a variety of tools, learn how to create different values, textures, and then plan and execute a scratchboard composition drawing. There are many tools used in this medium and Joe will explain how to use them all.
NOTE: Joe will be giving a FREE Scratchboard Demonstration that you will not want to miss. Are you curious about this relatively new medium? You may want to watch this live demonstration before you take Joe's workshop or just come and be curious about the process. Thursday, October 8th, 6 - 8 pm in the Art Gallery. It will be shown on the large TV screen.
All materials are included. No experience needed.
Bring your lunch, we can also place a pizza order. Bring some tight surgical gloves, small brush or cloth to keep things clean.

Form & Color by Bessann Triplett
The Jaffrey Civic Center is pleased to present Form & Color, an exhibition of non-objective abstract paintings by artist Bessann Triplett, on view from June 12 through July 25. An opening reception will be held on Friday, June 12, from 5 to 7 PM, offering visitors an opportunity to meet the artist and experience the work in person, along with light refreshments.
A bit from the artist: My paintings are non-objective, abstract works built through color, line, and form to activate the picture plane. I’ve always been drawn to the expressive possibilities of color, shape, and material. After a thirty-year career running a hand-weaving studio, I turned to painting to pursue a long-held desire to work with paint and mixed media. As a lifelong observer of art, world cultures, and the natural environment, I translate these influences into visual language—creating paintings that reflect an ongoing exploration of perception, memory, and experience.

Five Decades: A Journey Through Art in Nature by James A. Cusmano
This exhibition is a Retrospective Journey spanning over 50 years that brings together a collection of multimedia artworks inspired by the beauty, rhythm, and fragility of the natural world. Through a blend of silk paintings, pastels, relief watercolor monoprints, oil paintings, and ceramic tile installations, James Cusmano explores themes of growth, transformation, and humanity’s connection to the environment. Each work invites viewers to reflect on nature not only as a landscape or a flower to observe, but as a living force that shapes memory, emotion, and collective experience.

The Jaffrey Civic Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit cultural facility founded in 1966. This May, four new exhibitions will have you looking on the sunny side. In the East Gallery, painter Bridey McGlynn and ceramicist Caitlyn Marsh showcase solo collections that challenge perceptions of the self and the world around us. Then, flip into the West Gallery for traditional and re-imagined still lifes (including the sizzling frame above). The third-floor Davis Art Gallery will be yet another must-see, with an inspiring showcase brought to life by the Future Arts Workers.
These exhibitions will be on view through June 21 during gallery hours: Wednesdays through Sundays, each day from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. Always free, and open to all.
Change: A Juried Exhibition
By now, you've heard that the Future Arts Workers have been hard at work preparing their capstone exhibition Change. The thirteen arts administration students apprenticing with us called on artist members to submit an artwork depicting a type of change that matters to them, in the context of people, places, and societies. The resulting exhibition explores the impacts of technology and AI, amplifies the need for political reform, highlights feminist ideals, and considers the impact on our identities.

Still: A Juried Exhibition
In the West Gallery, experience two solo exhibitions installed side-by-side to compliment the other's form and focus. Bridey McGlynn stuns with large-scale abstracts with influences of the human form, and Caitlyn Marsh presents precise stoneware that contemplates the earth and mankind (and the delicacies of both).
Across the hall in the East Gallery, ArtsWorcester's most competitive juried exhibition spotlights still lifes. With over 300 submissions and an acceptance rate of just 16%, juror Rachel Passannante selected artworks for Still: A Juried Exhibition that either lean into traditional technique or challenge what you might expect from this classic genre.

James Dye: The Void, the Wheel, and the Monster

James Dye uses a painstaking and detailed ink drawing technique to create images of mysterious narratives. His imagery is deeply informed by symbols inspired by mythology, religion, psychology, and the history of art and architecture. Dye’s work tells stories – both personal and universal – about the terrors and wonders of the struggles between chaos and order, light and dark, and existence and oblivion. Dye was the First Prize Winner of our 89th Regional Exhibition of Art & Craft.

Call and Response: Kindred

The theme of FAM’s annual Call and Response collaboration with ArtsWorcester is Kindred. The most common definition of kinship is family. Families can be biologically connected; they can also be found and forged in love and friendship. In fact, sometimes the deepest connections are formed through mutual experiences or shared beliefs. Joint pursuits such as shared interests, hobbies, or passions are also fertile ground to establish strong relationships. The ten ArtsWorcester artwork selections, in combination with ten from FAM’s permanent collection, are representative of all types of kinship.

Artist Talk: Deborah Santoro, Veneer of Civilization
Saturday, June 27, 2026, 2 – 3 PM
Painter, printmaker, and interdisciplinary artist Deborah Santoro will share how she was inspired to create her artwork Veneer of Civilization for Call and Response: Kindred, and how this work connects to her broader artistic practice. Responding to Steve Locke’s photograph Untitled (Our Honeymoon), Family Pictures, Blue (2015), which includes a depiction of an 18th-century slaving vessel, Santoro carved and reinterpreted the 17th-century John Foster map of New England, largely redacting Colonial-era place names. Through this process, she examines the lasting impact of violence embedded in placemaking and the “veneer” that shapes ideas of home, history, and inheritance.

At 4pm on the afternoon of Sunday June 27, 2026, three bands featuring music from different world cultures will perform a free concert at Peskeompskut Park in Turners Falls. Guachinangos, Minqi Wang, and Myrtle Street Klezmer will take the audience on a family-friendly, multi-cultural journey, from Eastern-European Klezmer music to Latin American dance music to traditional Chinese music. This convergence of nationally renowned musicians will be a magical and inspiring event that you won’t want to miss.
Prior to the concert, Myrtle Street Klezmer bandleader and clarinetist Jason Ditzian will offer a participatory “Renegade Klezmer” workshop at the Brick House Community Center in Turners Falls. In this two-hour workshop for musicians of all levels, Jason will discuss his approach to klezmer and “Jewish music” in general. Participants will learn a few songs together and explore different approaches to the music, with an emphasis on improvisation, self-expression, and spirituality. Pre-registration is encouraged!
The free concert is on Saturday June 27, from 4-8pm, at Peskeompskut Park on Avenue A in Turners Falls.

19th Annual Free Family Fishing Day!

Our annual Family Fishing Day, at Barton Cove, with additional activities at the Great Falls Discovery Center. Join us for a day of FREE fishing fun. Adults and children of all ages are welcome. Dawn Marvin Ward, naturalist/educator, presents a slide show on mammals common to the New England woodlands followed by a hands-on sharing of related nature findings. Dawn is an educator and naturalist who has been sharing her appreciation of nature to folks of all ages for over 30 years now, and she is a board member of our Friends Group. In honor of Pollinator Week, make your own native bee habitat by “painting” with yarn, fleece, pre-felt shapes and water. A French / Breton Jam Session

An informal group of musicians gathers to play the enchanting traditional dance music from France and Brittany, commonly known as bal folk. This is not a performance but rather a coming together of musically minded friends. The event is free and open to the public to come and go at will. For all ages. Meet in the Great Hall.

Beginning Painting
This 4-week extension is a mad laboratory to keep us painting or get us back into painting if we have been experiencing a little “incubation time”. We will be open to any and all ideas that might help us move forward in our painting - want to try abstraction? Great! Want to see how far you can stretch 2 colors? Done! Want to just loosen up by throwing paint at the walls??? Fine - no, actually we can't do that… This time is your chance to chase down any questions that may have come up during our first painting class, with support from the teaching artist and your classmates. If need be, the teaching artist will provide prompts to get things going (ever tried painting 100 pears?)

Encaustics Class
Come play with hot wax! Discover for yourself what makes Encaustic paintings so extraordinary, exquisite, unique and dreamy! The creative possibilities, using this beautiful ancient art form of painting with beeswax, are endless. Build your painting skills while enjoying a different way of blending/mixing colors, creating depth and texture and so much more. Encaustic is a versatile medium that allows the artist to build painterly compositions very quickly. Wax layers can be built up and carved into to create complex surfaces. Those new to encaustic painting will learn the basics, from an introduction to the types of surfaces that are appropriate to paint on, to building the layers characteristic of this fascinating medium. All students will explore fusing, preparing a smooth or textured surface, incising, mark making with various tools as well as oil pigment sticks, embedding materials like paper, fabric and metal, image transfers and so much more.
This class is open to all levels of experience, with many demos and plenty of studio time to work on your own. The class environment is one of encouragement to play and discover so as to allow the creative inner landscape to emerge in each individual student so that they may find their own way of painting with encaustic paints. The community that’s naturally created in this open studio environment of making art together can add such amazing unexpected elements to our art making.

Unity Park Riverfront, First Street in Turners Falls, MA
RiverCulture, the creative economy program of Montague, invites you to a unique hands-on workshop led by biologist and artist Elizabeth James-Perry (Wampanoag) on Saturday, May 30 from 10am to 3pm at the Unity Park Riverfront (First Street) in Turners Falls. A 2023 NEA Heritage Fellow from Aquinnah, Martha’s Vineyard, Elizabeth will share her deep knowledge of coastal ecology and tribal heritage to this drop-in style workshop.
Working with natural materials including seaweed, chlorophyll, oak gall, black walnut and logwood, participants will dye a piece of cotton fabric according to traditional Wampanoag practices. Participants will also have an opportunity to experiment with traditional fish printing and leave with their unique, handcrafted creation. All materials are provided, and participation is free. This event is tented and scheduled rain or shine.

Come to Main Street Studios on Tuesday evenings. We have plenty of work space for you to set up with your writing, painting, knitting, etc.
We will socialize for a half hour-ish and then have a quiet hour or two to do the work. If you are inclined to share at the end of the evening - or the end of the summer, you are welcome to do so. But that is not required.
Main Street Studios has coffee/tea/water and maybe a few snacks. There are also options for delivery if you want to order dinner.
