Our House Made of Dreams
Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey, NH
|
|
“Our House Made of Dreams,” a collection of works by Sally Keller, is now on display in the display cases at the Jaffrey Civic Center. In addition to detailed drawings and paintings, the exhibit features prose, quotes from the artist, and artifacts from the home which inspired the display.
Here are some of Keller’s thoughts on the show: “In a way, this art with poetry show has been forty-six years in the making. This hand-built house started by taking two barns down and moving all that wood to a woodlot here in Jaffrey Center that had been in the family since 1903. Inspired by Carl Larsson’s house in Sweden, 13th-18th century Scandinavian and Swiss alpine architecture and Frank Lloyd Wright’s ideas of relating a house to a landscape, we imagined and designed and built this “work of art”.
The exhibit will be on display until June 11 at the Jaffrey Civic Center, 40 Main Street, Jaffrey, NH.
The Jaffrey Civic Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit cultural facility founded in 1966. The mission of the Jaffrey Civic Center is to provide and sustain a public venue where citizens, residents, and visitors of the Monadnock region can pursue artistic, educational, and civic activities. The Center’s goal is to contribute to the cultural enrichment and enlightenment of the community. There is no admission fee to the Civic Center and all art shows and receptions are FREE and open to the public. The Center also hosts fee-based educational and other programs, as well as serving as the home to the Jaffrey Historical Society. Submerged: An Oceanic Arts Odyssey
Hawks & Reed, Greenfield, MA
|
|
Submerged: an oceanic arts odyssey, featuring metal and mixed media sculpture and paintings by mother and son artists Nina Rossi and Jon Bander, opened on April 15 at Hawks & Reed in Greenfield. This exhibit showcases welded sculpture by Bander, aka Notorious Weld, including an elaborate, glowing octopus coat rack, along with ammonite, jellyfish and seahorse wall sculptures. Bander produced the new Hawks & Reed sign and stage logo, and had his first art exhibit here with Rossi in April, 2017. Rossi’s work includes soft sculpture jellyfish and boxfish, a mosaic fish, lobster paintings, and a ceramic nautilus shell housing a metal creature made by Bander.
Turners Falls native Bander studied welding at Franklin County Tech and the Advanced Welding Institute in Burlington, VT and worked in the welding industry prior to pursuing art. Bander recently completed a commission for ModVic, Inc of a 14-foot-tall metal cherry tree with bottle lights and aluminum blossoms, that was installed in Alexandria, VA . Rossi assisted Bander as they worked together in the studio for more than a month crafting the trunk, branches and blossoms out of found objects and metal sheet, pipe, and rod. See this and other projects at www.notorious-weld.com or Instagram @notoriousweld.
Rossi is a long time member of the Shelburne Arts Coop and studied art and writing at GCC and Smith College. She was owner/artist at the former Nina’s Nook gallery in Turners Falls (closed during COVID) and is a member of the art performance group, Exploded View. Find her on Facebook and Instagram @ninasnook.
The exhibit will remain up through June 15.
