Joint Campaign Increases Hope and Safety for Students in Tanzania
Throughout the month of June, supporters from LPGM and Friends of Mwangaza have given to a joint spring campaign to support the transformational, community-centered work of our mutual partner, Mwangaza, in Tanzania. To date, 15 donors have given $6,700 toward the $50,000 goal.
Safe and nurturing learning environments are more important than ever for students like Naitoti, a 15-year-old girl in Tanzania.
Because of overlapping factors like food scarcity and drought, it has become harder and harder for Naitoti to go to school. Her mother suggested that Naitoti get married to support the family, and their relationship has become strained.
With your support, however, Naitoti has enrolled in a school that provides her a safe and nurturing learning environment. This school is one of many that Mwangaza has helped.
| Will you help us fund Mwangaza by month's end? | On behalf of students like Naitoti, thank you for investing in safe schools! | | | John Anthony Joins LPGM Staff | |

| | After a Successful Pilot, Women and Girls Literacy Program Begins Phase Two | |
During a pivotal meeting in 2018, women leaders from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Central African Republic (ELC-CAR) emphasized that women’s literacy was a top priority. They believed prioritizing literacy for women and girls would enhance their quality of life by creating income generating opportunities and by promoting dignity. This discussion led to a literacy program pilot project for 80 women and girls in the cities of Bouar, Gallo, and Baboua.
With your support, the pilot program launched in 2024. The pilot was a success, and phase two of the program is currently being rolled out! Phase two began with training sessions for the instructors and an audit of the program's supplies. Last year's instructors are returning for phase two, as well as many of last year's participants. Additional participants are joining this year as well.
When classes begin, they will take place three times a week. The main goal of phase two is to continue teaching women and girls to read and write, so that they can contribute to the development of their families and their society. It also seeks to empower women to fight against the gender-based violence.

Sara, a six-session alumna of the Women in Agroecology Leadership for Conservation (WALC) program through Community Cloud Forest Conservation (CCFC), recently met the President of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo!
President Arévalo traveled to Cobán, the capital of the Alta Verapaz region of Guatemala, to host "un diálogo abierto" - or open dialogue - with some of its residents. Local residents were given the opportunity to share issues they're facing and to ask questions.
Cobán is geographically close to CCFC's campus, so CCFC received an invitation to participate in this event. CCFC co-founders Rob and Tara Cahill chose to send Sara. According to Rob, "She had all of her questions ready, and she got to be in the room for the open dialogue." He continued, "She had to overcome a lot of fear around public speaking, but she was ready to go."
Unfortunately, the event ran out of time before she could ask her question, but she was able to snap a photo with the president. Rob shares, "She said that it was really great, and that she was really glad she did it."
Sara is currently in college and is majoring in criminology. She has returned to WALC as a teacher, and her ultimate goal is to become a physics and math teacher.

In mid-May, the LPGM-India staff visited boarding home students' home villages to check in on students during their summer break (April-June), collect feedback from their parents, strengthen their relationships with students and their families, and learn more about the students' home lives.
A large percentage of the students' parents are migrant workers who earn daily wages. They leave home early in the morning and return late at night, making child supervision difficult and the boarding homes a crucial support system. Many parents shared that they work tirelessly to earn ₹500 - or less than $6 - a day, and that they do not wish for their children to struggle in the same way.
When LPGM-India staff spoke with students' parents, the parents emphasized the importance of safety and proper food for their children. They also expressed a deep desire for their children to receive quality education in order to secure stable, well-paying jobs. Over and over, LPGM-India staff heard them say that their dream for their children is to gain knowledge, improve their lives, and explore opportunities beyond their village.
While on break this summer, students biked around their villages, swam in ponds, lakes, and wells, visited grandparents and extended family, learned typing skills, helped their mothers with housework, earned wages doing farm work, and watched movies at the beach.

Students Return to School; Over 300 Students Await Sponsors
Summer vacation has wrapped up, and students have returned to our partner's boarding homes in Southern India to start the new academic year. Now is the perfect time to start a student sponsorship!
For just $40/month, you can provide nutritious meals, consistent healthcare, school supplies, and staff support for a student at the margins as they work hard in school.
Many students are Dalit (formerly known as “Untouchables”) and come from poor families. Dalit people are considered to be born outside of the Indian castes, historically given unsanitary work, and therefore also thought of as spiritually contaminated.
By sponsoring a student, you will help break cycles of poverty, illiteracy, malnutrition, child marriage, child labor, and abuse. You will provide hope for a brighter future!
| | | Meet Vignesh: Saron Alum, College Graduate, and Supervisor at MRF Company | | |
When Vignesh was young, his parents, migrant daily wage laborers in Coimbatore, struggled to find safe childcare for him. His rural village of Amoor was frequently affected by caste-related unrest, making it a difficult place to live. Fortunately, Vignesh's family learned about Saron Boarding Home through a neighbor.
Vignesh joined Saron Boarding Home in 2019, and while he didn't have a specific sponsor, his daily needs were met by Project Education India's many general supporters. With their support and encouragement, he passed his 12th grade exams and graduated in 2023.
He then studied at Annamalai Polytechnic College for three years. After graduating, he successfully secured a supervisor job at MRF Tire company via a campus interview.
Vignesh shares, "A heartfelt thank you to LPGM and all my sponsors. Your support allowed me to complete my education, which I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. Finishing 12th standard at Saron Boarding Home opened the door for me to join Annamalai Polytechnic College, and I'm now delighted to be placed with MRF Company. Thank you to everyone at LPGM, all the sponsors, and especially the managers, wardens, and staff of Saron Boarding Home for everything you've done."

Transcending Language Barriers through Song in Guatemala
By the Rev. Sara Spohr, LPGM board member and traveler
| |
One afternoon at the Community Cloud Forest Conservation (CCFC) Center in Guatemala, my niece Karina (15) and I trekked out into the farm to plant trees with Elida and Deysi, leaders in the Women in Agroecology Leadership for Conservation (WALC) program. There was definitely a language barrier, so the outing began mostly in silence, figuring out how to communicate the logistical needs of the tree planting.
Eventually we found a rhythm and Elida began to hum a song. Deysi joined in. Karina perked up, because she’s a singer too. Soon, tree planting became secondary to the music and laughter. I was simply a witness to the joy. I happily recorded a video of the moment. The video features Elida, holding one of the tree seedlings like a microphone, and singing with full voice and heart. In the video I can also hear Deysi and Karina laugh and sing. I can hear my own voice asking for more: "mas, mas."

Twenty Years Later: Lessons from my “Holy” Surreal Trip to India
By Petra Vanderford, LPGM board member
| |
As I was sitting in a church pew during an ordinary night of confirmation, someone began passing out half-sheets of paper with an announcement on them. "Looking for youth interested in traveling to India this summer!" I brought the paper home, not really sure why I was interested. My mom responded, "If you feel like this is something that God is calling you to do, we support you. We’ll make it work."
So, there I was – a shy teenager, signing up to travel half-way across the world for who knows what reason. I mean, I was sure we’d participate in a good amount of manual labor, and I enjoyed helping people in whatever way was needed. But as some may know, a trip like this often impacts you more than any impact you could have on a community.

God's Perfect Timing: LPGM Board Member's Book Travels to India and Into the Arms of her Sponsored Student
When LPGM staff members Shannon Mahedy and Mary Peterson visited India in February 2025, they brought four copies of Joanna Suresh's book with them. Joanna is an LPGM sponsor, board member, and Program Committee member. Joanna is also an author and publisher.
Shannon and Mary gave a copy of Let the Little Ones Learn: an ABC Bible Book to each of the four ALC boarding homes. A special moment occurred when they showed the book to Joanna's 13-year-old sponsored student, Preethi. When Joanna saw the photos and videos from this moment, she wrote a beautiful reflective piece to express the feelings that surfaced as she saw her book in the hands of her sponsored student.
Joanna's Reflection
"When I saw the precious pictures of Shannon and Mary from LPGM placing my books into the hands of my sponsored student, my heart was so full. A beautiful mix of emotions filled my heart - pure joy, overwhelming gratitude, and when I took a moment to truly reflect, what touched me most deeply was witnessing the beautiful way God weaves His plans together.
Back in 2020, when everything shut down and my 2½ year old couldn't attend preschool or Sunday school, I found myself tired of the same old alphabet books. What if we could teach ABCs through Bible verses instead? My husband encouraged this simple idea, and two years later, God's grace turned it into a beautiful book.
| |
That this little book, born from a weary mama's desire to teach God’s word with my own child, would travel across the world to bless my sweet sponsored child - someone I'm eagerly looking forward to meeting someday. It left me in complete awe - His plans are SO much higher and more beautiful than anything my heart could have dreamed, and I'm deeply grateful that His ways surpass my own.
| |
Even when the world's measures of success seem quiet - few reviews or low rankings - I'm learning to trust that God is faithful and has wonderful plans for my book. I find such peace knowing that He makes all things beautiful in His perfect timing. If you feel called to share this book with the precious little ones in your life, I would be so blessed to hear how it touches their hearts."

New Creation: Learning Reconciliation & Listening Beyond Borders
By Rev. Dan Ruth, LPGM Executive Director
The Apostle Paul's radical vision of transformation and reconciliation has been an ongoing guidepost for me; it was the text at the center of my ordination into ministry. In Christ, the old patterns of division, the ancient hatreds, the tired scripts of us-versus-them—all of it passes away. Something entirely new emerges. And we, as followers of Jesus, are entrusted with the sacred work of reconciliation.
Here in the United States, we find ourselves in a moment when some who claim the name of Christ are building walls instead of bridges, scapegoating immigrants and nonwhite communities, instead of treating them as neighbors. It is not reconciliation. It is not the way of Jesus. And it must pass away.
