Private Ground School Returns In Person
|
Tired of staring at your computer screen and frustrated when you ask it a question and get no answer? Our group Private Pilot Ground School class is returning to in-person training beginning next month on Tuesday, July 6th.
The classes are delivered in a highly interactive manner with content that is constantly being updated and is relevant to flying in the Bay Area. The training prepares you for the FAA Knowledge Test and provides a solid foundation for the oral portion of the checkride. Some unique features include:
Flexible - Sessions will be taught Tuesday evening and you still have the opportunity to watch the recorded training.
Fun - Meet and interact with other students.
Fantastic value - Including bonus tour and visit with SQL tower controllers, hands-on with the SCFC maintenance team to explore under the engine cowling, and workshops to apply cross-country skills and use weather briefing tools.

Lobby Enhancements Arrive
|
A new addition to the club! Meet the new couch, now residing in our main lobby for your comfort and enjoyment. We hope that the couch as well as the well-stocked snacks and drinks are continuing to bring a sense of community at the Flight Center. Stop by and have a seat!

The Return of the SCFC BBQ
|
Ever since our 8th Anniversary BBQ got cancelled last year due to COVID, the Flight Center community really hasn't had a chance to gather as a group in our usual manner. Luckily, enough progress has been made in vaccination of pilots and their families, we will again begin our regular summer activities, starting with a big Welcome Back BBQ on Saturday, July 3rd at 12 PM!
The event will be in accordance with state and local health guidance, and we will have music, food, and other fun activities. We hope that you will feel safe enough to reconnect to our Flight Center community.

Airplane Ramp/Parking Areas Renamed
|
To come into compliance with FAA directives, the San Mateo County Airport Office changed the names of the hangars and parking areas. SCFC has planes both north and south of the Control Tower. The area north of the tower (formerly known as Juliet) will now be called North Tower. The area outside our office and south of the tower (formerly known as Kilo) will be called South Tower, but you can call it Flight Center and the tower will know what you mean.

Protecting Airplane Door Hinges from Wind Damage
|
When pushing an airplane back into its parking spot, remember to close all cabin doors. When doors are left open, the wind can move them rapidly and cause damage to the door hinges. Once the plane is pushed back into the parking spot, open the door as needed to retrieve your belongings, then close it once done.
Damage to door hinges can cause issues, leaving planes in maintenance and unavailable for member rentals for longer periods of time.

Calculating Performance using Apps
|
As pilots we can now compute accurate performance values for aircraft through our fingertips, using smart phones and tablets. To help us understand some of the advances, SCFC has invited POH Performance application developer Steven Kleiman to investigate how technology has provided extreme accuracy to calculate aircraft performance in various situations. Some of these scenarios include the effects of density altitude on takeoff and climb performance, winds on runway slopes, or determining the ability to make climb gradients.
In this seminar on Saturday, June 5th at noon, Steven will show the airplane performance app he's been working on, and provide various scenarios on how a pilot can accurately calculate performance for all phases of flight. Join us and follow along on your device as we delve into the capabilities of technology to solve our performance challenges.

SCFC Member Profile: Nick Gomez
|
SCFC: You had an interest in flying at a very young age. What was it that called you to aviation?
NG: I always thought planes were cool, but I didn't know much about them. A couple of years ago, my dad drove me to the Half Moon Bay airport cafe for lunch. I saw some planes landing and I thought it would be really cool if I could get a pilot license. So, I watched a ton of YouTube videos of pilots and the beautiful views from the sky, and I couldn't wait to get my license.
SCFC: What do you do when you are not flying? What other hobbies and activities hold your interest?
NG: When I'm not flying, I like to play the piano, go on long bike rides with friends, and play online video games. I've also recently started to read informative books on random topics that interest me.
SCFC: Not everyone persists in flight training, because of the time and money required. How did you stay motivated through the entire process?
NG: There were times where it was very hard for me to stay motivated in fight training. I had to remind myself of the privileges that a private pilot holds. I knew if I quit, I would regret it in the future.

SCFC: Were there any moments in your training that stand out as most memorable?
NG: I remember the moment when the short-fielding landing on Runway 25L/7R at KLVK finally clicked. Hearing that stall warning horn over the dirt is a very uncomfortable feeling to overcome, but once I got the hang of managing the plane's energy, it was very satisfying hitting that point within 200 feet.
SCFC: What is next for you as a pilot?
NG: My next step as a pilot is to enjoy my PPL by flying to places that I haven't before. In a couple of years, I plan to get my instrument rating.

Join EAA and SCFC Pilots Help Young Eagles Take Flight
|
Have you ever taken a kid on their first flight? The opportunity to ignite the passion for aviation in a young person's soul means the world to many pilots. Keep in mind that safety always comes first, and as with any new passengers, the pilot needs to take many safety precautions.
All pilots have to be EAA members, and view and pass a youth protection video (about 20 minutes of their time).
SCFC Pilots participating in Young Eagle flights are able to use a discounted Philanthropy Rate for the rental. Talk with the Front Desk to make sure your flight is billed correctly.

Every year, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) releases a Flight Training Experience Survey, where members and students are encouraged to share their feedback about their flying club and their instructor.

Airport of the Month: Santa Maria (KSMX)
|
June's Airport of the Month is Santa Maria, which is a convenient stop on the way to the LA Basin. With multiple runways, an air museum, and FBOs, this is a great place to refuel and rest before continuing your journey.
It is also a great airport to practice instrument approaches, with an ILS, VOR, GPS, and a back-course Localizer approach. The coastal fog is often present in the morning throughout summer, so instrument-rated pilots hoping to stay current will enjoy the low layer to hone their skills.

FOG Challenge: CA Volcano Hunting
|
When people think of volcanoes in the United States, most people think of places like Hawaii or the Pacific Northwest states of Oregon and Washington. However, did you know that California has a few volcanoes scattered across the state?
With towering peaks, the formidable Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen both lie at the northern tip of the state and are viewable from hundreds of miles away. These volcanoes are easily viewed from both the air or you can fly to Weed Airport (O46) or Rogers Field (O05) to see Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen from the ground, respectively.

California also has a handful of other volcanic sites in the northern, eastern, and southern parts of the state. While not as tall and imposing as the volcanoes listed above, some do pose a threat and have erupted in the last few thousand years. They are also in some very beautiful areas of the state, so plan a flight and revel in the scenic sights below.

Restarting FOG Lunches in July
|
Starting in July, FlyOutGroup will begin hosting monthly lunch and dinner flights again! With COVID restrictions lifting for vaccinated people, the FOG team has decided to bring back these popular events so pilots can see each other again.

Note: please continue to wear a mask at these events if you are not fully vaccinated. FOG can't wait to see everyone again, but let's continue to keep the flying community safe and healthy!
