Launch of New Training for Supervisors in Partnership with the Mayor’s Youth Academy

This summer, VMP is thrilled to have begun facilitation of "Connect - Focus - Grow," a specialized curriculum from MENTOR National to help managers create a mentoring mindset when supervising first time employees. This training was launched in June in partnership with the Mayor's Youth Academy . Every summer, 100 Richmond city youth ages 14-19 spend six weeks learning new workplace skills with city agencies, nonprofits, and corporations as an extension of the Mayor’s Youth Academy. Virginia Mentoring Partnership led their first ever supervisor training session, engaging 85 supervisors on building relationships with their new youth employees. Topics included youth voice, communication, furthering mutual learning and understanding, cultural humility, goal-setting, and growth mindset. Next month, the youth will be trained using the same curriculum to help them connect, focus and grow relationships within the workplace to expand their supportive network.

If you are interested in learning more about this workplace readiness mentoring training for supervisors, youth and mentors, please contact Natalie Foster, Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships, at natalie@vamentoring.org .

2nd Annual VMP Alumni Gathering

VMP board members Jaclyn Wood and Jeff Wilson hosted the 2nd Annual Alumni Gathering to share updates with former board members and staff as well as honor one of VMP’s founders, Cathy Howard . Jaclyn and Jeff will be rolling off the board this year after serving for 8 years, and Cathy will be retiring from VCU at the end of this month after 31 years of service. It was a delight to be able to reminisce with former board and staff and toast a true champion of mentoring.

In the months ahead, VMP will share some exciting news . We were pleased to be able to connect and share our news first with some of our closest VMP friends during this small gathering.  Stay tuned for more to come !
