June always gets me excited for so many things...Father's Day, my birthday, Cancer Survivor's Day, Pride month and Paddle for Pink! With the pandemic cancelling our in-person celebrations for the past two and a half years, we are once again starting to enjoy celebrations together. It's so heartwarming to be able to see those faces that we have been so longing to see IRL (in real life) - and not over a computer screen!
Our dear friends from Machestic Dragons have had to cancel their 2022 Paddle for Pink event this year again as they (like us here at the BCRC) want to ensure safety for all of their members and attendees. It's a disappointing and hard decision to make, however, even now, we are still seeing Covid numbers jump up and down. We have many members within the breast cancer community who are still very vulnerable and we must take every precaution that we can to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all. But alas, we here at the BCRC are excitedly but cautiously making plans for the return of our in-person services. We are grateful for your continued support and understanding as we navigate these uncharted times. Stay tuned for exciting updates!
We are also grateful to those who continue to support us finically and through volunteering! Without your participation, volunteerism and donations we can not provide the services and programs we have continued to provide throughout this pandemic. We have two great opportunities this month for you to show your support financially; the Warrior Dash (a FUN 5k virtual run/walk) happening on June 18-19th and our annual Spring appeal ( that you should be receiving in the mail soon). Please consider helping us either by donating or asking your circle of family and friends to donate. We appreciate your help and every dollar does count!

Wishing you all a wonderful Father's Day weekend (don't forget to educate the men in your life about good breast health! For more information click #mengetbreastcancertoo)! I am looking forward to seeing you all IRL this month!

Stay safe,
Melissa

WELLNESS WEBINARS
We are excited to invite you (and your family!) to an amazing night of wellness and learning!

Bread is alchemy. It takes just four ingredients: flour, water, yeast, and salt and works with the air surrounding us and it suddenly comes to life. In this class you will learn the process of how to create your own sourdough starter, the first step in creating delicious and nutritious sourdough bread. Mary teaches a very simple method, as she seeks to empower people so they too can bake their own bread in their home oven to break with family and friends.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
A letter from our friends at the Machestic Dragons:
If you’re reading this, you’ve fought or are fighting cancer, so you obviously have the heart of a dragon. Time to don the vest of one and become a MACHESTIC DRAGON!
The Machestic Dragons are a recreational dragon boat team devoted to sharing our passion for life, dragon boat paddling, and encouraging and empowering those affected by breast cancer.  Our membership is open to ALL: breast cancer survivors and supporters, athletes, and non-athletes alike. We practice on Mercer Lake in Mercer County Park, NJ, and enjoy a paddling season April to October with coached practices and festivals. However, membership is a year-round affair, working to support our mission, a fitness program in the winter, social gatherings, nonprofit/business fairs, fundraisers, and our signature event – Paddle for Pink, the second Saturday in June. Paddle for Pink is a breast cancer awareness Dragon Boat Festival fundraiser where the proceeds are donated to local breast cancer programs that provide free services to breast cancer patients/survivors.
Dragon boating has been connected to breast cancer since 1996, when Dr. Donald McKenzie, a Canadian sports medicine specialist at the University of British Columbia, started a dragon boat team for women with a history of breast cancer. The team Abreast in a Boat tested the belief that this activity would benefit breast cancer survivors by providing upper body activity in a challenging and supportive environment.  Dr. McKenzie strove to dispel the myth that women who have undergone breast cancer treatment should refrain from repetitive, upper body exercise for fear of developing chronic lymphedema. On the contrary, Dr. McKenzie’s research showed that dragon boating increases flexibility, aerobic capacity and strength while also building harmony, self-esteem, and positivity among breast cancer survivors.
Breast cancer survivor dragon boat teams caught on in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, China, England, Italy, Poland, the United States and many other countries. The International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission (IBCPC) encouraged the formation of breast cancer survivor teams and now international festivals and competitions take place around the world. Members of Machestic Dragons have competed in the International Festival in Canada, Australia, USA and Italy…..so far!
We would love to have you join us on the water in our “floating support group” for some fun, camaraderie, and an exhilarating workout!
