A Tribute to Sue Cole

On May 28th Northwoods Book Arts Guild lost a faithful member and cherished friend.  Sue Cole was a woman of many talents, and shared generously with all who knew her, through classes, workshops, blogs, Facebook and in casual conversations. She had a tremendous thirst for knowledge and was always on the lookout for new resources, tools, ideas, designs and techniques. Her knowledge of bookmaking - its history, structures, and tools - was extensive, and when there was a question or doubt about a binding issue, Sue would do the research and return with an answer.

We were pleased to have Sue present the Guild program in March and grateful that the large group that gathered that evening had the opportunity to learn the Blizzard Book structure from her.  Sue brought to the meeting not only materials (including her own decorated papers!) to make our own models, but also a mathematically calculated grid of measurements - so that we could make the structure in many different sizes.

The evening of Sue's death happened to coincide with a Guild meeting, so many of us wondered why she was not there. It was not like Sue to miss a meeting!  We were greatly shocked and saddened to hear later that she had passed away that night.

The Fairbanks Watercolor Society and Fairbanks Arts Association are planning a Celebration of Life for Sue in July at Pioneer Park.

Some of us had known Sue for more than 30 years, and others met her more recently through the Guild or the many other organizations Sue was connected to in Fairbanks. We will all miss her generous spirit, warm smile, and tremendous zest for life.  Read more.
