Why Cancer Patients Suffer Weight Loss and How to Stop It
Wasting syndrome, a rapid weight loss unrelated to a person's diet, affects more than half of cancer patients. A study by ICRF Project Grant recipient Ayelet Erez, MD, PhD of the Weizmann Institute of Science, published in Cancer Discovery and summarized in Israel21c, breaks down the cause of wasting syndrome and its additional effects.

Circle of Inspiration: Michael Battipaglia's Journey
Join the Circle of Inspiration, share the inspiring story of yourself or a loved one, and support cancer research.

What advice would you have for people on their own cancer-related journey?

Keep your eye on the prize and know that you’ll have good days and bad days, but every day is one day closer to being cured.

This month, honor your father, grandfather, uncle, or bonus dad. Tell us why he inspires you and help inspire others to raise money for the fight against cancer, and we'll share your story with the community.

When it comes to understanding cancer survival rates, the short answer is: cancer death rates are in decline and five-year survival rates are on the rise.

How do these rates improve? A combination of science, technology, and awareness. From earlier detection to breakthroughs in treatment, cancer survival rates have risen worldwide over the past few decades, resulting in a better quality of life for cancer survivors. ICRF is proud to be a part of the increasing survival rates since 1975.
Yuval's Story
When he was seven years old, Yuval was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a very aggressive form of cancer that doubles its growth rate every 24 hours. Meet Yuval and listen to Yuval's mom, Avital, talk about their cancer journey from initial discovery to the impacts four years later. Dr. Shai Israeli, head of Hematological Malignancies Research at Tel Aviv University, Director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Schneider Children’s Medical Center, and ICRF Research Professorship Grant recipient, gives additional insight into this disease and about cancer research.

It is well known that cannabinoids have therapeutic effects for cancer patients, primarily in palliative care. But can these unique plant compounds do more? Dr. Meiri and his team tested the effect of cannabis in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and learned that a specific extract can actually kill off T-cells with a specific mutation.

Proteins are the workhorses of the cell and are responsible for almost all cellular processes. One protein, UFM1, is closely linked to several types of cancer. The Wiener lab is working to reveal the mechanisms by which UFM1 attaches to its target proteins, with the goal of using this pathway for novel anti-cancer drugs.

An antigen is any substance that causes the immune system to produce antibodies to fight off that substance. (Think pollen and sneezing.) Antigens may also be found on the surface of cancer cells. The Reiter team is developing a novel therapeutic strategy to overcome cancer relapse by using the patient’s own engineered T cells to work with these antigens.

The most abundant white blood cells in the human circulatory system are neutrophils, which guard against microbial infections and participate in events of inflammation. In cancer, they can kill tumor cells and limit disease progression. But their cancer-fighting power is often limited by factors generated by the tumor. The Granot lab is assessing the potential of a novel drug-delivery platform that modifies neutrophils, helping them function even in the presence of these factors, limiting tumor growth and progression.
Science At A Glance
What is Oncogenesis?
Oncogenesis is the complex process by which normal cells transform into cancer cells. This process involves a series of genetic changes and cellular adaptations that allow cells to grow and divide uncontrollably, evade the immune system, and invade other tissues in the body. Understanding how oncogenesis works is critical for developing new treatments and strategies for cancer prevention and survivorship.
