*New Feature* Research Highlights
We are thrilled to introduce a new research section in our monthly newsletter, dedicated to keeping you informed about the latest advancements and breakthroughs related to bladder cancer.
The Androgen Receptor in Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer is known to have a marked difference in incidence rates between men and women, with men having a fourfold greater lifetime risk of developing the disease. Emerging evidence suggests that the role of the androgen receptor (AR; the receptor which mediates the effects of sex hormones such as testosterone) in the development and progression of bladder cancer is an important factor in explaining this observed difference. Therapies that target AR activity and signalling present a promising focus for novel therapeutic interventions for both men and women.

Radical Cystectomy Versus Trimodality Therapy for Muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer: A Multi-institutional Propensity Score Matched and Weighted Analysis
This multi-institutional study provides the best evidence to date showing similar oncological outcomes between radical cystectomy and trimodality therapy for select patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer. These results support that trimodality therapy, in the setting of multidisciplinary shared decision making, should be offered to all suitable candidates with muscle-invasive bladder cancer and not only to patients with significant comorbidities for whom surgery is not an option.

Omar: Why did you decide to volunteer with BCC?
Bladder Cancer is one of the most common cancers in Canada, but it is also one of the more unknown ones. I joined BCC so that I could reach people and help inform them of this common yet unknown cancer

Dami: What attracted you to the PEV role?
With a background in public health, I understand the significance of awareness as a tool to reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases. Joining the PEV team of Bladder Cancer Canada not only avails me the opportunity to contribute to the fundraising efforts, but also to help in raising awareness of bladder cancer in Canada. It is an impactful work that I am proud of and grateful to have.

Natalee: What is your favourite part about being a PEV?
My favourite part of being a PEV is finding out what inspires others to walk. As this is a cause that is close to my heart, it is warming to listen to others share stories about who they are walking for and tell them about who is my reason for volunteering. Listening to others through my PEV phone calls connects me to the BCC community and continually motivates me to be the best volunteer I can be.

"My sister Madelyn was 33 years old when she was diagnosed with bladder cancer, she passed away within the year. She LOVED baking, her signature dessert was brownies. That's why this year we’re hosting a bake-to-order sale during June and July to raise awareness for Bladder Cancer. 100% of the sale prices go towards fundraising for the 2023 Canada Walks for Bladder Cancer Chocolate Honda for Madelyn team."
