NEWS & UPDATES
Introducing ... CK at Home!
With school winding down and the void of the summer cancelations, an outlet for Summer Camp is needed more than ever. We all have a stake in the reprieve that camp offers to our campers, families and staff members.

Never before has there been such a need to bring home the nourishing experiences of Camp Kawartha. With that said, we are taking our next steps forward with a new online initiative,  CK At Home ,  to be launched on Sunday, June 28 th , to coincide with the scheduled camp season.
Our theme throughout the summer will be to bring the traditions of Camp Kawartha to your homes. We’ll be posting fun activities, crafts, and challenges weekly. We also look forward to incorporating our camp values that have always been hallmarks of the Camp Kawartha experience. Follow us throughout the summer at  www.ckathome.ca   to keep up with the fun!
Thank you Camper Families!
The COVID-19 pandemic has been hard on everyone. And so too, for our summer camp. We rely on income from the summer to keep us going all year long. The loss of this revenue has had an enormous impact on our organization.

However, many families value the Camp Kawartha experience so much they have stepped up to make a donation to our Thrive 100 Campaign . We appreciate this more than we can say! To date, just over $7,000 has been collected.

Thrive 100 refers to our 100th Anniversary which is coming up in 2021. If you haven’t already done so and you are in a position to help, please consider making a donation to help us remain strong and vibrant for the next 100 years!
Kiwanis Club of Peterborough & Motion Cares
Have Made our Trails More Accessible!
You may not know this, but at our Main Site on Clear Lake we have five kilometers of hiking trails winding their way through forest, fields, and wetlands. And now, thanks to Kiwanis, these trails have become accessible to those campers and students with limited mobility! They have purchased a Trail Chair for us, one that will open up a world of adventure for children of all abilities.

We also have links to the Trent Lands Trail System at our Environment Centre on Pioneer Road. And thanks to Motion Cares, these trails are now more accessible as well! They have generously donated another Trail Chair!

We thank Terry McLaren and his team at Kiwanis, plus Shelley McNamara, Rob Carleton and Motion for their compassion and willingness to help kids with disabilities venture out into the woods!
Thanks to the Rotary Club of Peterborough-Kawartha and Chemung Lions Club,
We are Even More Accessible!
When we looked at Camp Kawartha's facilities and layout with the help of the Disabilities Council, we learned some valuable lessons about accessibility. Since that review, Camp Kawartha has worked hard to make the buildings and grounds as accessible as we can, and with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Peterborough-Kawartha and the Chemung Lions Club we are advancing in our cause.

Rotary donated funds that have supported the purchase of an amplification system to help those with hearing challenges to better hear our instructors, especially when outdoors! Their funds will also help us purchase the materials necessary to build two wheelchair accessible picnic tables and dining hall tables !
The Lions are helping us purchase the materials we need to build an add-on to our docking system. This ‘bump-out’ will be where we mount our Hoyer Lift. The Lift is used to move a person from a wheelchair into a canoe or kayak, and the dock needs to be robust enough to support the Lift, the person being moved, and the person controlling the Lift to help safely manage this transition.

Accessibility is about inclusion, and with the help of the Peterborough-Kawartha Rotary and the Chemung Lions we are able to open doors on adventure and fun that were once closed. We thank both Clubs for their generosity!
The Auto Topper Goes to its New Home
Last fall we hosted an online auction of our 1961 Lakefield Auto Topper and 1957 7.5 Johnson Outboard Motor. Both these items were originally donated to the Camp by Prior Smith, a member of the Antique & Classic Boat Club.

This boat has a bit of a history. It was the last one sold before Lakefield Boats closed its doors. It was given as a Christmas gift to the original owner and Prior even had the original bill of sale!
Steven Harrison was the successful bidder on this amazing set, and he picked up his ‘winnings’ recently for transport to the family cottage.

We offer a huge thank you to Prior for his generosity in donating these unique pieces of Lakefield history to the Camp. And congratulations Steven! We are sure the boat and motor are in loving hands.
We Encourage 3rd Party Fundraisers
For those not familiar with the term, this type of fundraiser relies on supporters, community members, or businesses to create fundraising campaigns that benefit a particular non-profit, like Camp Kawartha.

Have you ever been asked to donate to a charity at the checkout at the LCBO? Instead of gifts, have you ever made a donation to a charity at a friend’s birthday party? Do you remember running a lemonade stand as a kid and giving the money to the local pet shelter? You’ve probably heard of crowdfunding! Well, these are all 3rd-Party Fundraisers.

Camp Kawartha has been hit hard because of the loss of Summer Camp. If you are interested or able to host a 3rd-Party event and want to reach out to us with your idea, please email Susan at philanthropy@campkawartha.ca to find out more. We have ideas, our fundraiser toolkit, and can help support your project.

Note: We ask that you contact us first before you institute any fundraiser, particularly at this time.
SUMMER CAMP
Meet Our CK at Home Team
Get involved in the Session A Community Campfire
Our launching event each summer camp session is our traditional campfire held on the 1 st  night of each session. Campfire is a time when the whole camp comes together in our ‘Campitheatre’ to introduce themselves and perform songs or skits as a cabin. Our Campfires are a celebration of the camp spirit that we want to keep alive in 2020. This summer we're introducing Community Campfires.

These Community Campfires   will stream on our YouTube Channel on Sundays corresponding to the would-be start dates of each session – with the first coming-up on  Sunday, June 28th at 7pm!

Visit ckathome.ca for full details on how you can join in.
NATURE NOTES
Camp Kawartha is helping to raise Silk Moths
Large Silk Moths have been declining in population because of habitat loss and the use of pesticides. Mostly active at night, they are beautiful and under-appreciated part of Ontario wildlife.

Thanks to moth kits from Tim Dyson, some beauties just hatched out! Learn more about this and get your own moth kit!
Animal Showcase: The American Eel
The American Eel starts its life in the North Atlantic and migrates inland, so it has the amazing ability to survive in either salt or fresh water! Their travel area extends from Niagara Falls in the Great Lakes, up to Algonquin Park, throughout the St. Lawrence waterway, and up the Labrador coast.

Because of its long body, many people consider it more of a snake-like creature than a fish, but it is a fish. The Eel was once commonly fished in Ontario, both recreationally and commercially. However, their numbers have declined substantially and they are now endangered…Parks Canada researchers suggest an alarming 99% decline! Overfishing, loss of habitat and interrupted migration routes (think hydroelectric dams) seem to be the main culprits. Restocking programs have helped the Eel make a modest comeback.

Put aside your squeamishness and remember that the American Eel is essential to aquatic ecosystems. It is a hunter with a diverse appetite including insects, frogs, fish, clams etc., and it also cleans up dead animal matter. It is also prey for other, larger fish. Because of its importance, let’s hope American Eel numbers continue to go up and it has a successful recovery!
Jacob is back with a new Nature Note! After you've watch this latest one make sure to check out our YouTube Channel for the full listing of Nature Notes from this Spring!

Stay tuned, there are more on the way!

FROM THE CK KITCHEN
First Day of Camp Cookies
Every start of summer session comes with the quintessential treat from the CK Kitchen, the first day of camp cookies.

So for the first time ever we're going to share the recipe with the CK Community so that you can make your own First Day of Camp Cookies at home .

Maybe pack up a few and share them with a friend or neighbour, and spread some of that camp love.
A Quick, Easy, and Delicious Camping Meal!
This month's recipe from the CK Kitchen came to us from Carter as he was about to launch his canoe for a solo backcountry trip in Algonquin Park. We're sure he might be planning to make a couple of these on his adventure.
The CK Kitchen is gathering up all their recipes and meal ideas for a possible CK Cookbook . As they flip through their pages of recipes, they would love to hear your suggestions! What are your favourite camp meals, what trip food do you love the most, and what is ‘iconic’ camp food to you?
