BREEDING BREAKTHROUGHS USING TISSUE CULTURE

Although plant tissue culture is often used for micropropagation, it is also a powerful tool for plant breeding including the induction of polyploidy. Polyploid induction can expand breeding opportunities, enable the development of seedless triploids, restore fertility in sterile hybrids, and enhance ornamental characteristics, environmental tolerances, and pest resistance. This newly published REVIEW summarizes methods and techniques for inducing polyploidy through in vitro tissue culture systems.

IPPS-ER MICRO-MEETINGS

Recently, the Area Meeting Committee made the decision to hold virtual "MicroMeetings" instead of in-person meetings this year. Th ese one-hour virtual meetings allow you to learn something new, see innovative plant production in action and connect with other plant professionals.  Our inaugural meeting planned for June 11th was cancelled last minute with the early arrival of our host's newborn! The next meeting is planned for July 23, hosted by Liz Dunham at Knight Hollow Nursery. But don't worry, we will reschedule the June meeting and hope to have some exciting presentations to come!

HRI SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR 2020-2021

HRI scholarships are made possible by seven special endowment funds that aid students who are seeking a lifelong career in horticulture. HRI, and the individuals and businesses who support it, consider graduating students in horticulture to be the lifeblood of the green industry. IPPS Eastern Region Executive Secretary-Treasurer Margot Bridgen steps down from her post at the end of this month after 26 years. You can read her parting thoughts and learn why you may see her again in the not-so-distant future HERE . Stay tuned next month when you will be introduced to the new IPPS-ER Executive Secretary-Treasurer Stephanie Stockton.

Foundation Internships Starting!
The IPPS-ER Foundation is happy to announce we are supporting two interns this summer with Foundation funds! The recipients will each receive up to $1,000 to help pay for their approved expenses.  Katelyn McVay at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA with Eleanor Gould as supervisor and Christopher Thompson at Gold Coast Fruit in Ghana, Africa with Mary Oluonye as supervisor are the recipients.

Internship Committee Chair, Ron Amos, of Evergreen Nursery said, “It took some doing to develop and promote a practical way to support interns in horticulture. We’ve rolled this out over the last year or so and fully expect it to be a work in progress.”
