Article: The Truth Test

I have been fielding complaints from clients about no training dollars for courses. These complaints were from companies and industries historically known for a commitment to developing their employees. The three most recent complaints came from three very different industries. The only correlation is they are all very large companies (more than 50,000 employees). They all remembered a day when management development was a priority for dollars and time. Now training means Webinars on your own time. (“No problem boss the my kids don’t recognize me any way, I’ll hole up in the den click on to a Webinar on Time Management on Saturday too!”)

So I decided to dig into this a little further. What I actually found was that Small companies (under a thousand employees) and Medium companies (under 10,000 employees) have increased training dollars per employee as the economy has improved while Large Companies (over 10,000 employees) decreased training dollars! One of the recent complainant was a director in a Big Pharma category what was his training budget? Nada, Zero, Zip.  I suggested perhaps a Bake Sale would help!

For years statistics have shown a very positive correlation between hours of training per employee and stock price, employee retention and engagement.
So I want to get your vote. Totally anonymously of course. Please answer the following questions:

1.      Has your access to training dollars increased or decreased over the past few years?
2.      Is there a correlation with stock price going down and training dollars waning or vice versa or no correlation?
3.      Is there a correlation between training dollars and the trend line on your own individual satisfaction with your company?
4.      Note the size of your company according to the above version of Small, Medium and Large.

I promise to publish the sanitized results.

HINT: If you are looking to move on to new organization, watch out for the seduction phase. They will tell you “we really care about our people.” Ask exactly how many dollars you will have for your development. Its THE TRUTH TEST.
If they can’t or won’t answer BAD sign! “We care about you” is a nice thought Dollars committed to your development is evidence! Make them take the test.

As always we invite your comments.
Congratulations are in Order!!
