After months of planning, preparation, and so much collaboration, Chocolate and Cheers was everything we hoped it would be, a lovely evening filled with friends, advocates, meaningful conversations, inspiring speakers from Speakers of The House, and extraordinary art.
One of the greatest joys of the evening was seeing creativity take center stage through beautiful artwork created by people supported by The Arc. Art has a remarkable way of creating connection and reminding us of the talent, vision, and limitless possibilities within our community.
It was also my honor to present eleven Excellence Awards recognizing community advocates, employees, self-advocates, and volunteers who continue to move our mission forward in meaningful ways. These moments of recognition remind us that advocacy takes many forms and that progress happens because people show up for one another.

We carried that same spirit into The Arc Maryland conference, where advocates and champions from across Maryland gathered to celebrate and strengthen the work of expanding opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was inspiring to be surrounded by so many people committed to creating a future defined by possibility.
As we look ahead to summer, I'm reminded of what becomes possible when community comes together. Thank you for showing up, supporting, advocating, and helping us create moments that remind us what’s possible.

Chocolate & Cheers brought together supporters, community members, and friends of The Arc of Howard County for an evening filled with connection, celebration, and, of course, delicious chocolate and wine.
Thanks to the generosity of our attendees, sponsors, donors, and volunteers, the event not only raised important support for our programs and services, but also highlighted the incredible impact our community can make when we come together.

We love it when the people we support are always up for exploring new places. They can easily geek out over anything from history to hands-on discovery!
Through our Community Development Services (CDS), the people we support have been soaking up knowledge as they stepped back in time at the Titanic Museum, the B & O Railroad Museum, and the Harriet Tubman Center, and dove into interactive fun at the Science Center. These outings were more than just a change of scenery. They are for sparking curiosity and making memories!

The home on Creekbed in Columbia is shared by three wonderful ladies: Susan, Julie, and Sandra. The house is filled with warmth and a sense of calm, much of which comes from their Direct Support Manager (DSM), Gina, who has already made a meaningful impact just eight months into her role.
“She’s been doing well as a newer DSM and has come in and made her mark,” says Kate Ohl, Director of Supportive Housing Services. “There is a nice sense of calm in this house that she has helped cultivate.”
| Each woman has her own room in the four-bedroom house, which also includes a basement, garage, back porch, and spacious yard. A spare room serves as an office for Gina and the Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) who support the ladies 24/7. The home is clean, well-maintained, and thoughtfully cared for. A floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace adds warmth and character to the living room. | | The ladies’ personalities shine through in the way they decorate their rooms with photos, stuffed animals, artwork, fashion beads, birthday balloons, and whimsical décor. | |
“A home should feel like a home,” says Gina, “because if you don’t feel comfortable in your home, you don’t want to be there. Home is a safe place for everybody.”
Gina has helped create a safe and stable environment by building trust and consistency. She also makes an effort to know each woman individually — from their favorite foods and hobbies to their unique personalities. Susan is independent, Julie is playful, and Sandra is quiet.
| “I give them a listening ear when they have something to tell me,” Gina says. “I take care of them like I’m taking care of myself, and I take care of the house like it’s my own.” | | | | |
Having a home of their own gives Susan, Julie, and Sandra comfort, privacy, and independence. Unlike an institutional setting, they each have their own room, personal space, and the support they need to feel truly at home.
“What I enjoy most about my job is the support I give them and just being with them,” Gina says. “I know they need my help, and I’m happy to provide it.”

Gina's ability to remain composed, even in challenging situations, has helped create an environment where both staff and residents feel safe, supported, and at ease. She leads with patience, understanding, and quiet confidence, setting a tone that encourages respect, cooperation, and emotional stability throughout the home. We appreciate her for the balance, reassurance, and stability she brings to her role.
