Dear CISSC friends and partners,

This month, we congratulate South Carolina's entire Class of 2022 – and in particular, the 116 case-managed CIS seniors who walked across the graduation stage and into the next chapter of their lives. Whether they're pursuing apprenticeships, careers, degrees, or joining the armed forces, these grads have overcome barriers and taken charge of their futures.

In a school year focused on recovery, we saw students bridge academic gaps and conquer mental and emotional hurdles. Across the state, we had the pleasure of serving more than 21,000 students with Tier I whole school supports, and 1,900 students with Tier II small group interventions and Tier III one-on-one case management during the 2021-22 school year. We are grateful for the Site Coordinators who walked alongside them on their journeys, as well as the education professionals we partner with to ensure every student has the resources and support they need to succeed.

Our program does more than ensure students have basic needs – it fosters an environment where healthy relationships between caring adults and students can grow. We know that young people thrive when they have transformative one-on-one relationships and a sense of belonging. Every single CIS student is proof of that. To our team, and to our partners – thank you for dedicating so much to the students and families we serve across the state. It takes a village, and we're grateful that you're part of ours.

"I would have not done it if it weren't for José believing in me back in middle school." – Damian
Meet former CIS student, Damian and his middle school Site Coordinator, José Morales-Martinez!

This is the look of a proud Site Coordinator watching the first CIS student they ever worked with walk across the graduation stage. José first met Damian when he was a student at Lakeview Middle School. Fast forward and Damian is now a high school graduate who's getting ready to start an apprenticeship in Tennessee in construction and welding!

"I so thankful. I really am. You helped a lot, Mr. José. I wish I could come back and talk to the kids that are there now and tell them my story and where I came from and how life changes you in many ways good and bad. You just gotta make the best of everything that comes your way. Thank you so much for your help." – Damian

Here's to the students we serve and the Site Coordinators who make a world of difference in their lives!
Meet Site Coordinator, Miranda Burton!

Congratulations to Miranda for being recognized in SC Black Pages' 2022 Top 20 Under 40!

Miranda is a Site Coordinator at Carolina High, and brings more than 12 years of experience working with children and families to the team. In 2012, she started a nonprofit called Marion's House, which gives an E.A.R. (Empowerment, Awareness, and Recovery) to those who have been impacted by the cycle of child sexual abuse. Over the years, she has worked with more than 1,000 children and trained more than 600 adults through Marion's House. As a two-time survivor of abuse, Miranda believes it is her "duty to help protect kids from being preyed upon and also making adults aware of their responsibility to protect children."

Miranda is a graduate of Coker College with a BA in Psychology and an MBA in Organizational Management and Leadership. She is also a certified Darkness to Light, Parenting Partners, and ACES facilitator.
Meet our Lowcountry Director of Programming, Aimee Lassor!

Aimee first learned about CIS while completing an internship for her MA degree in School Counseling at Haut Gap Middle School on Johns Island. The CIS program started at the school around the same time she was there, and it embodied everything Aimee believed was necessary to help students succeed. She joined CIS as an After School Coordinator in December of 2002, and over the years went on to serve as a Site Coordinator and a Community Engagement Coordinator before taking on her current role.

Aimee believes that the focus on relationships is one of the key ingredients to the success of the CIS model. "I was struck right away by CIS founder Bill Milliken's philosophy that programs don't change people, but that relationships do. I have had much success in my work with young people and in my own personal life by embracing this idea."
"It has been my pleasure to be the first board chair for CISSC. Watching three regional entities come together to grow and build on each other has been amazing. CISSC is a great investment for South Carolina and I am so happy to have been a part of it." – Terry
Meet Board Member, Terry Schmoyer!

For more than 15 years, Terry has dedicated his time and talent to Communities In Schools. First as a board member and development committee chair in the Midlands, and then as our first Board Chair of the new statewide CISSC.

Terry is Managing Partner of Schmoyer and Company, LLC, a certified public accounting firm in Columbia that services clients throughout the state. The firm has a specialty in health care consulting.

"I enjoy helping those that need a lift to get to the next level. CISSC embodies this spirit in how we help students. They are smart kids that just may need that extra guidance to succeed. This could be one of our many social services, tutoring, mentoring or a pat on the back from a site staff member. We offer so many great ways to help the kids we serve stay in school and graduate. To quote one of our CIS of the Midlands founders Francis McMeekin, “ A person can lose a lot of things – their money, power, religion but an education is something that once obtained you can never lose, and it can never be taken from you.” South Carolina needs happy, educated students. These kids are our future, and we need to do everything we can do to give them the lift they need to be successful. What could be more important than that?"

As Terry's time as Board Chair comes to a close, we want to thank him for his leadership during a monumental moment for CIS programming in South Carolina!
"We are working to ensure local students have access to quality education and receive the support they need to be successful.” – Lindsay Leonard, Boeing South Carolina
Spotlighting our partners at Boeing!

Being part of the South Carolina community is important to Boeing. The company has invested more than $52 million with local charitable organizations, with an emphasis on education, veterans and the environment.

Team members also donate locally through the company’s Employees Community Fund where they have raised nearly $2 million for local organizations. Boeing also runs a robust volunteer program that has served more than 8,000 volunteer opportunities across the state.

“Boeing is proud to support the Communities in Schools program in North Charleston. Through our investments and employee engagement, we are working to ensure local students have access to quality education and receive the support they need to be successful. We are thankful for the dedication of the CIS coordinators who continue to make an impact in students’ lives, leading them to high school graduation and beyond.” – Lindsay Leonard, Senior Director of State and Local Government Operations, Boeing South Carolina
