Silver Lake to Open for 2024 Season

The Croton Recreation Department is excited to announce the opening of Silver Lake for the 2024 swimming season! The park will begin with a weekend-only opening on June 22 and 23, before transitioning to full-time summer operations starting on June 28.

Season Dates and Hours:

• Weekend Only: June 22 - June 23
• Full-Time Opening: June 28 - September 2 (weather & staffing permitting)
• Daily Hours: Monday to Sunday, 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM

Swimming is only permitted at Silver Lake Park when a lifeguard is on duty. Whether you're a seasoned swimmer or just looking for a place to cool off, Silver Lake offers the perfect escape right here in our community. The park's serene setting and clean waters are ideal for a family outing, a solo swim, or a relaxing day by the river.

Swimming at Silver Lake is exclusively available to residents of the Village of Croton-on-Hudson and the Croton-Harmon School District. You can choose to pay a daily swim fee or obtain a seasonal swim permit. The rates are detailed in the table below. To enjoy the facilities, you must have a current Recreation Photo ID. If you need to renew or obtain a new ID, you can do so online or contact the Recreation Department.

As June begins, I hope you all have been able to enjoy this beautiful late spring weather. I want to thank the American Legion Fox-Eklof Post 505 for once again hosting a dignified and moving Memorial Day ceremony on May 27. Approximately 100 residents attended to remember and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I also want to thank the Village staff who made the 36^th annual Summerfest a resounding success this past Sunday, June 2. Grand Street and Old Post Road South were teeming with residents and visitors enjoying all that Croton has to offer. I am sure many of you, like me, are already looking forward to next year’s event!

Several hundred residents likely received a legal notice from the Village in the mail last week. Under consideration by the Board of Trustees is the creation of the Indian Brook-Croton Gorge Watershed Protection Overlay District. If approved, this district will provide additional protections for properties near the Croton River and its watershed area. The map of the properties to be included in the watershed can be viewed here. The Board will be holding a public hearing on the proposed law to create the district next Wednesday, June 12, and the public is welcome to submit their comments, either in person at the meeting or in writing prior to the meeting.

Also under consideration at the next board meeting on June 12 is the residential parking permit system for portions of Cedar Lane, Nordica Drive and Truesdale Drive. The proposed local law can be viewed here. The local law provides for guest passes for short-term houseguests, service workers and family aides, as well as an area near Mayo’s Landing for those without permits to park. In tandem with this law, the Village has also stationed a new park ranger at Mayo’s Landing on the weekends to ensure only those with Parks ID cards or fishing licenses are visiting this conservation area. Members of the public are welcome to submit their comments, either in person at the meeting or in writing prior to the meeting, on this local law, as well.

Finally, as many of our commuters know, the Village has recently switched to a new parking permit system for the Croton-Harmon Train Station parking lot. If you have not yet signed up for an account, I encourage you to do so, even if you will not be purchasing a permit this summer. That way, your account is already active if and when you do need a permit in the future. As a reminder, Section B in the parking lot has reopened for parking while Section F is closed for construction. I encourage everyone to take advantage of parking under the canopy system; it will keep your car cooler during the summer heat!

Progress continues on Croton's 4.2 MW solar canopy project at the Croton-Harmon train station parking lot. Section B (above) has officially reopened for parking - commuters are encouraged to take advantage of the canopy shade! The white containers adjacent to the northernmost of the 12 canopies are power storage batteries. The project is slated for completion by the end of this year (credit: Arevon Energy). Section F, the resident only parking lot at the train station, will be closed for approximately 30 to 45 days for the next phase of the solar canopy installation. Please note that resident weekend stickers will be valid in Section I until Section F is reopened. 

The Village's 36th Annual Summerfest took place in the Upper Village on Sunday, June 2nd. A time-honored Village tradition, this event brings the Croton community together to celebrate the start of summer. The event kicked off with a parade down Old Post Road South and Grand Street, led by this year's Grand Marshal Anthony 'Tony' Gagliotti, accompanied by his wife Ronnie, chauffeured in a classic car by Mark Franzoso. Tony has dedicated over 73 years to serving the Village in various capacities. Following the Grand Marshal were local dignitaries Mayor Brian Pugh, Village Manager Bryan Healy, Trustee Nora Nicholson, Trustee Len Simon, County Legislator Emiliana Ulaj, Town of Cortlandt Supervisor Richard Becker, and Town Councilmen James Creighton and Robert Mayes. Several Village and community groups marched in this year's parade, including the Croton-Harmon Section 1 Baseball Championship Team - go Tigers!

Over 120 vendors lined the streets of the Village this year, a record number since the COVID-19 hiatus. Baked by Susan once again hosted the wildly successful (and messy) pie-eating contest at the Dummy Light. Visitors enjoyed live music from local legends The Fat City Rockers and Without a Net, and a variety of food and drink options.

The Village extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who made this event possible. Planning and setting up a Village-wide fair of this scale is no easy task. The Public Works crew were there before dawn and stayed until the last vendor packed up, ensuring a family-friendly environment where everyone could relax and have fun. The Croton Police, Fire, and EMS also deserve our appreciation for keeping everyone safe throughout the festivities. Finally, thank you to our office staff for coordinating the logistics, operations, and promotion of the event.

We are already looking forward to next year's Summerfest!

Westchester County Compost Giveaway

High quality, screened compost will be available for Westchester residents on Saturday, June 8 at Croton Point Park, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents who register and arrive on time will receive 2 bags of compost (about a 5-gallon bucket). DEF will load the compost into your car. Reservations are required. Use the Compost Giveback reservation calendar to book a time slot! Juneteenth Celebration

Croton's IDEA Committee invites everyone to celebrate Juneteenth with three exciting local events:

• Morning Celebration at Bennett Conservatory (10 AM - 12 PM): Enjoy a brief history presentation, musical performances, crafts, and more. This event is open to all ages.
• Afternoon Picnic at Vassallo Park (1 - 4 PM): Join us for family-friendly games, light refreshments, and live entertainment by artists Therese Plair and Kiah Thomas.
• Evening Open Mic at The Black Cow (7 - 9 PM): Experience an evening of poetry, spoken word, and music. Artists are encouraged to register at 6:30 PM.

Summer Concert Series Kickoff at Senasqua Park

Get ready to rock! Free summer concerts return to Croton-on-Hudson's waterfront Senasqua Park with the Mike Risko Band. Spread a blanket on the lawn and watch the sunset over the Hudson River while listening to live music. The Mike Risko Band will bring the heat with a mix of crowd-pleasing rock hits and fun pop tunes spanning different decades and genres. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from Baked by Susan.

A free Village Shuttle will run on Friday nights in June, starting June 21, to support the Summer Concert Series. The shuttle will loop around the Village, dropping passengers off at Senasqua. More details will be available at a later date.

Family Movie Night at Senasqua Park - Super Mario Bros Movie (Rated PG)

Movies are shown in Senasqua Park beginning at dusk. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic, enjoy the sunset and stay for the movies. In case of rain, movies are shown on the next evening. Super Mario Bros Movie (Rated PG): follow the adventures of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and other characters as they embark on a quest to save the Mushroom Kingdom from the clutches of the villainous Bowser. Expect plenty of familiar characters, iconic power-ups, and references to the classic video game series.

Summer Concert Series: The Bluechips

Location: Senasqua Park, Croton-on-Hudson Waterfront

Spread a blanket on the lawn and watch the sunset over the Hudson River while listening to live music. The Bluechips are a Rock n’ Roll power trio from New York’s Hudson Valley, featuring Jake Albi (drums/vocals), Tom Davis (bass), and Paul Beladino (guitar/vocals). Beverages will be available for purchase from The Green Growler and food will be available from Baked by Susan.

July 4th Revolutionary War Living History Presentation

Date and Time: Thursday, July 4 - 10:00am to 12:00pm

Location: Van Cortlandt Manor, 525 S Riverside Avenue

Join us at the historic Van Cortlandt Manor for an engaging and educational Revolutionary War Living History Presentation. The event will begin with an exploration of the origin and history of the First Rhode Island Regiment, highlighting the formation, challenges, and legacy of this distinguished unit. You'll then learn about the pivotal Battle of Rhode Island and the heroic role played by the First Rhode Island Regiment, followed by a fascinating account of the Battle of Pine Bridge, fought in Yorktown Heights, NY.

Historian Duane Jackson and Joe Cerrito will provide an overview of the Continental Army, offering insights into its structure, strategies, and significance in the fight for American independence. They will delve into the history of the 2nd New York Regiment, uncovering the stories and contributions of this important unit in the Revolutionary War.

Attendees will also learn what soldiers wore, how they lived, and how they fought, culminating in a live demonstration of musket firing techniques used during the war.
