June Newsletter
Greetings!
June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month and we also recognize PTSD Awareness Month. There are a lot of capital letters in that sentence, which point to the intersectionality of identity. Each person has their own unique experience as a human being. All aspects of a person's identity must be considered in the workplace for INclusion to take place.
Ariadne, a 2022 Disability:IN Minnesota Career Connections Mentoring Program mentee, shares The Black Trans Prayer Book as a resource that centers on both blackness and transness. It can be an insightful resource for many to read, and particularly helpful for autistic people, "because its works empower one's personal understanding of their place in the world..." We support Ariadne’s advocacy voice in helping us to educate others on the intersection of these important communities.

Please see our Disability Inclusion Calendar with more disability-related dates.

Project SEARCH Employment Journey
In February, Disability:IN Minnesota had a member meeting where we featured a presentation on Project SEARCH for our members. This month, we are sharing Calista's story, to show the impact that the Project SEARCH program has on an individual's employment journey and life.

My Project SEARCH journey started when I was in 10th grade. I attended a Project SEARCH informational meeting and tour of the hospital. I was so excited to put in my application for this amazing internship. I waited until I was in my last year of eligibility for school and open enrolled to Minneapolis Public Schools from Bloomington school district to attend Project SEARCH.

During my internship, I was fortunate to gain experience in 3 different departments within the hospital. My favorite department was the Central Processing Department. When I completed the internship, I wanted to apply for a job, but I needed a certification. I enrolled at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. I completed the Sterile Processing program and earned my certification. I was really nervous at the beginning because I had always been a Special Education student.

I feel very fortunate to find out Children's was hiring in the department that I love. I applied, interviewed, and was offered a job! I look forward to beginning my career at Children’s MN Hospital.

Thank you, Project SEARCH for giving me the opportunity!
