National Festival of Breads

Several faculty and staff members attended the National Festival of Breads to promote the department and get the word out about our outstanding majors.

The event is America's only national amateur bread baking competition. Learn more about the festival here .

Orientation and Enrollment

There were many new faces that came through the department in early June for Orientation and Enrollment.

The students were able to meet with their advisors, check out their classrooms and enroll in classes.

Grain Science Student Success Center

A few of our faculty, staff, and students started working on updating the Grain Science Student Success Center.

The space will be doubled with half of it as a lounge area and half for more serious studying. After painting, we will be adding new carpet and furniture.

IGP Institute Courses

The IGP Institute held three on-site courses in June for a total of 48 participants.

Faculty Spotlight

For this month's Faculty Spotlight, we are featuring our Buhler Instructor of Milling, Jason Watt. He shares his time between teaching undergraduate students, conducting industry outreach and training as well as facilitating short courses at the IGP Institute.

Watt has been with K-State for four years in his instructor role and has seven years of prior experience in the industry. He says that he always planned to come back to K-State, but never thought that it would happen so soon.

"I had the ability to work with interns and new hires when I was in the industry, and I saw how much I enjoyed working with and training the next generation of millers, trying to help them learn and understand things. I had a couple of individuals who encouraged me to apply for the position and thought I'd be a good fit for it."

Internship Update

This month's Internship Update is from Joel Moldrup, junior in Milling Science and Management.

"I am interning with Seaboard, my location is Lusaka, Zambia. I am helping commission a brand new mill and once it is complete they will send me to Dakar for a bit and help run the mill. After that is complete I will be sent to Kansas City, Kansas, to work at corporate for a week or two."
