Staff Pick of the Month
by Carmen Maria Machado
(PS3613.A2725243 Z46 2019)

In the Dream House is a relentlessly honest memoir by Carmen Maria Machado about the time she spent in an abusive relationship with her girlfriend. Machado uses gorgeous prose to detail the psychological manipulation and gaslighting she withstood while living with the woman she loved. The memoir is a rare and vulnerable depiction of the complexities of abuse in queer relationships.

Special Topic:
Gainsboro & Roanoke History
You may have noticed the beautiful new walkway connecting the main RHEC building to the Claude Moore Education Complex. Engraved in this walkway are historical themes and events about the local community. The RHEC campus is located within the historic Gainsboro neighborhood of Roanoke, which was once a thriving business and entertainment district for African Americans. The Gainsboro community has a rich history, and many of the buildings we see (and learn in!) every day have stories, memories, and meaning behind them.

Accompanying the granite markers in the walkway is a recently developed mobile app titled The Gainsboro History Project. This application provides an interactive history and walking tour of African American influence in the Gainsboro neighborhood. It is a beautiful and well-researched look at Roanoke's history, and we highly recommend the RHEC community check it out!

In recognition of both these projects, the library has pulled together a list of books in our collection that further explore Roanoke's history. Many of these books were also used as resources in creating The Gainsboro History Project.
