GCL Redevelopment
A Highlight of Recent Developments
1.The first grant application was denied but other opportunities for additional grants are being considered along with community fund raising efforts and volunteer hours and duties which may have a positive effect on any future grants.

2.As a result of current absence of grant funds, Phase 1 of the redevelopment plans will be scaled back to a $200,000.00 budget prioritized by the board relative to what we've been hearing from the community. The redevelopment committee is now in the process of considering other funding models which would allow the other elements to be developed in order of priority and cost these are:
  • New rink boards on concrete slab including basketball courts $210K;
  • Pickleball, resurfacing, posts, nets and fence on location of existing basketball courts $15.5K;
  • Repair and resurface of tennis courts $17.6K (not including a growing sink hole located adjacent to the east tennis fence);
  • Garden club, removal of far north end of existing basketball courts, adding trees, shrubs, benches and additional landscape $10.2K.
  • Total $253.3K

3.Phase 1 redevelopment had originally also included Outdoor Fitness elements, Skateboard structures or skate path and Beach Volleyball which had been previously identified on community survey questionnaires and noted as elements which could be developed independently at a later date as funds become available.

4.The Redevelopment committee will be introduced to the City of Edmonton project manager dedicated to our project sometime next week to move the project forward to the next 4 stages: Concept, Design, Build & Operate.

5.The committee is hopeful this scaled back project will be able to proceed to construction later in 2020.
Revitalization Project Funding
The Glenora Community League building and grounds revitalization project continues on. Plans are currently underway to carry out the Phase 1 project, which will focus on a new rink, improvements to the basketball courts and tennis courts, as well as exploring the feasibility to incorporate other features including, but not limited to, pickleball, gardening, and volleyball. Additionally, the community league building is seventy years old and is calling out for some much needed repairs and maintenance, which are expected to require a significant amount of funding to address. While funds have been set aside over the years to provide some relief towards these expenditures, they are far from sufficient to cover the full extent of the requirements. Without the full funding to proceed with further redevelopment, along with the needed repairs and maintenance, we may be left with the difficult decision of closing down programs that may no longer be safely delivered as a result of deteriorating conditions. The community league board is seeking out expertise within our community to lead in the fundraising efforts to address these challenges. If you are interested in leading this very important initiative, or know someone who might be interested, please email Nadia Mursky (nmursky@telus.net) for information on attending our next virtual community league meeting on June 10th , 2020 from 7pm to 9pm.
COVID-19 Updates
Now that Edmontonians are starting to spend more time outside their homes and connecting with
others, we all need to be extra vigilant about following the public health orders and Alberta Health’s
guidelines. These rules and guidelines drive the City’s Relaunch decisions. Maintaining 2 metres of
distance between yourself and others, practising frequent hand washing and sanitizing, avoiding
gatherings of more than 50 people and staying home if you feel unwell -- these are how we will stop the
transmission of the virus and thrive.

Effective May 22, playgrounds, skateparks, tennis, pickleball, volleyball and basketball courts, disc golf,
outdoor fitness parks and athletic tracks began to reopen . Basketball courts and disc golf courses are
ready immediately. Tennis courts will take a bit longer to unlock and reopen in order to rehang nets and
clean surfaces. We’re asking Edmontonians to allow our crews the time to remove barriers if they’re in
place, to ensure everyone’s safety.

No league play is allowed and no new bookings will be taken for any field or court at this time.
Spray parks will remain closed for the 2020 summer season. Picnic sites are open for casual use by
groups of 50 people or fewer.

Beginning May 25, the Animal Care and Control Centre (ACCC) began the intake of healthy stray dogs
dropped off by Edmontonians. ACCC will increase microchip scanning services for found dogs. The intake of healthy stray cats will happen at a later date, to be announced.

For some of these re-openings, there are new rules and expectations of Edmontonians. Your best source
of current information for these and other City decisions and actions is edmonton.ca/covid-19. There is
a handy at-a-glance resource on how people can use outdoor recreational facilities here.

Public Health Guidelines
  • Maintain 2 metre physical distance
  • Gather in groups of 50 people or fewer
  • Only share common equipment with members of the same family or cohort
  • Stay home if you feel sick
  • Bring your own hand sanitizer
  • Wash and sanitize your hands before and after using these areas

Additional Guidelines for Using City Amenities
  • Users should use local playgrounds in their neighbourhoods and sanitize their hands before and after use.
  • Singles activities in tennis or pickleball courts require users to maintain 2 metres of physical distance.
  • Tennis or pickleball doubles are allowed, provided it is with members of the same household or family cohort.
  • Equipment should only be shared by members of the same household or their family cohort.
  • Games on basketball and volleyball courts will only be permitted if they are with members of the same household or family cohort. These spaces are also open for casual use, for example, shooting a ball.

Sports & Wellness
What does it mean to be grateful? Gratitude is being thankful. It's more than a thank-you for a favour or gift, it is being appreciative of everything that is important to you and good in your life. You can be thankful for a gift, but you can also be thankful to watch a sunset, do well at a sport or be alive.
Gratitude is linked to well-being. Studies have found that people who practice gratitude appear to be more optimistic, pleased with their lives and connected to others when compared to those who reflect on daily hassles or on everyday events. As we start to reopen our economy and lift some restrictions, there is a lot to be grateful for.

Self Care Moment: When thoughts, feelings or sensations are overwhelming us, taking time to ground ourselves in the present moment can give us an opportunity to regain perspective. Using our senses is one way to bring ourselves into the present moment. Using your immediate surroundings, take a few moments to do a “senses countdown.” An example is provided here, but you could substitute or repeat any sense for each step.

Glenora Preschool is a uniquely diverse and inclusive program for children ages three and four. We provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where children can grow to their full potential through:
  • An art based program.
  • Quality programming with a focus on each individual child's needs and interests.
  • Whole child development wherein each child is nurtured emotionally, socially, physically, creatively, and intellectually.
Although classes are not currently in session due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are preparing for next school year as usual. A few spots remain in our 2020/2021 classes. Garden Club
The garden group has received notification that Front Yards in Bloom for 2020 will be commencing shortly and our volunteer committee is being put together and judging of yards and public spaces within Glenora will commence until the end of June. Signing and brochures of nominated yards will be done one early a July. We are very much looking forward to seeing everyone’s hard work in their yards this year.

Most of us have planted our vegetable gardens and annual flowers and we await for both to flourish. We love the idea and ability to dig our hands and feet into the earth and watch it all grow.

Cumming's Corner: Greetings From your MP
Dear Constituents,

When I was elected last fall, I could never have imagined that we would find ourselves in a pandemic
two seasons later. I hope you have all been able to follow the public health measures in place in our
province. On my part I have been working from home as I am sure many of you have as well, and have
become very familiar with platforms like Zoom, Google Hangouts, Skype, both for professional and
personal purposes.

Part of my job as a MP during the quarantine has included virtual sittings of the Standing Committee on
Finance, which you can find online either on my Facebook page or via the Parliament website, and I have also tried to keep track of all the announcements made by the federal government in the past 8+ weeks. I have been speaking with many interest groups and stakeholders and learning how they have been affected by the pandemic measures, and I have been advocating for them with the federal government in Ottawa. Whether emphasizing commercial rent relief as an important issue, or including the non-profit sector in the measures in place, these are important issues to stand up for and speak out on.

Please use my website as a reference point for government programs (the information on it is taken
from government websites and referenced accordingly), and if you have experienced any issues applying
for the federal programs in place, whether as an individual applicant, or a business owner, please feel
free to email me about it. While we are not taking walk-ins at my constituency office, my staff and I
remain available to you by phone/email (780-442-1888 and james.cumming@parl.gc.ca).

If you are a business owner and think that you might be able to reopen whenever the province considers
it safe to do so, please let me know as I would like to be there and support you. Similarly, if as an
entrepreneur you don’t think you’ll be able to carry on, I would like to hear from you and pass on your
concerns and specific issues to the federal government.

I want to express my personal gratitude for all the frontline workers who have kept the rest of us going
over the past months – from the doctors and nurses in our healthcare, to all maintenance staff
everywhere, grocery store staff, truckers, farmers, social workers, all first responders, small business
owners who have been able to keep their doors open, the public servants who have been delivering
much needed financial help for those who found themselves without a salary since mid-March, and
anyone else I have been forgetting to mention here. We would not have been able to carry on without you, so thank you for everything that you’ve done for us.

I hope you have been staying safe and healthy, and thanks to everyone’s efforts we have been
thankfully flattening the curve. See you on the other side, in the community.
Hoffman's House: Greetings From your MLA
I hope you and your loved ones are keeping safe and healthy during these unprecedented times.
Many members of the Edmonton-Glenora community have been reaching out to my constituency office
looking for answers over the past few weeks. Many are facing new realities due to COVID-19, and things are changing rapidly, with new government announcements and programs almost daily.

I've been inspired by how so many Albertan's have embraced their responsibility of physically distancing over the past several weeks. I know many of us are feeling anxious about the future, and want to return
to a state of normal. Generally, people want to go back to their jobs, business owners want to re-open,
and we are all looking for a sense of economic security. I know I’m looking forward to having tea on the
patio at Vi's For Pies and seeing kids enjoy the Glenora School playground again! However, it is critical
that we take an approach that is based on evidence, that incorporates broad testing as a foundational
element, and ensures that our healthcare system has the capacity to address.

As Alberta’s Education Critic, the safety of students and staff must be a top priority as we return to
school. I know students are excited to go back to school, and parents and guardians are looking forward
to return to classroom learning. With the added risk of COVID-19 and multi-system inflammatory
syndrome in children (MIS-C), it’s even more important to make sure classrooms are not overcrowded
and the right supports are in place to keep kids healthy. Our education system has experienced cuts that
have resulted in hiked fees on parents all across the province. Parents and guardians deserve to know
that their children are returning to school with adequate safety measures, and they must to have their
questions answered.

If you, or someone you know has feedback or advice, I'd love to hear from you. Email
edmonton.glenora@assembly.ab.ca or call 780-455-7979 to set up a call or virtual meeting. I also
encourage the littles in your life to join me for Stories with Sarah on Facebook Live every Tuesday and
Thursday at 11 am!
