The Superintendent, Principal and Teacher positions require individuals to be certified to teach in Arizona and to be currently employed in, or have retired from the education profession, in the specific category of their appointment.
Professional Practices Advisory Committees shall act in an advisory capacity to the State Board of Education in regard to certification or recertification matters related to immoral conduct, unprofessional conduct, unfitness to teach, revocation, suspension, censure, or surrender of certificates, and matters related to immoral or unprofessional conduct, unfitness to teach and the discipline of non-certificated individuals.
The PPAC is the administrative body that hears compliant cases on educators' certificates, educator identification numbers (EIN) and educator certification applications. Cases are brought forth by SBE when allegations of misconduct discrediting the profession are investigated by the Investigative Unit and are taken to a hearing to provide due process to the educator. In many instances, the state is requesting discipline on the certificate or EIN. The PPAC hears the case, creates Findings of Fact, Conclusions of Law and takes action on a recommendation for the SBE to take final action. Case documents are provided to members in advance of hearings and the SBE Project Director of Enforcement Actions oversees the work of the PPAC.
At this time, the PPAC meets the second Tuesday and Wednesday of each month. There are two PPACs who alternate months, meaning each PPAC make-up only meets six times per year. SBE will be setting up a third PPAC committee for future additional PPAC meetings. Until that time, expected by January 2023, members of the third PPAC make-up will be used as alternates for the current two PPAC committees to assist with absences.
PPAC terms are four years, but new appointments may be shorter in order to complete the term of the existing PPAC position.
Prior to applying, please note that the PPAC meets in-person in the SBE boardroom. Virtual attendance by PPAC members is no longer an option. Additionally, consistent attendance is required, in order to keep quorum and consistency among the PPAC committees.
If you are interested in applying, please complete the application and send it to Garnett.burns@azsbe.az.gov by Friday, June 3 at NOON. Staff will follow-up with applicants and provide information on the PPAC and discuss the role requirements. SBE staff anticipates recommending applicants to SBE for approval at the June 9th SBE meeting.
If additional information is needed about the PPAC, please reach out to alicia.williams@azsbe.az.gov to schedule a time to speak.
