June 2023 Edition

Summerfest is Here!

The Village of Croton-on-Hudson will host its 35th Annual Summerfest street festival on Sunday, June 4th, 2023. A time-honored Village tradition, Summerfest is all about food, family fun, and celebration!

The fun will kick off with a parade down Old Post Road South, starting at Veterans Corners and moving to the Dummy Light on Grand Street. Over 30 local groups will be participating in this year's parade, which features a special homage to the Village's 125th Anniversary. Expect antique cars, floats, music, bagpipes, mascots, puppets, and more! This year's distinguished Grand Marshal is Bill McCabe, President of Croton EMS. A map of the parade route is available here - the parade will begin at 12:45 PM.

From 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the streets of the Upper Village (Grand Street/Old Post Road South) will be filled with live music, entertainment, delicious food & OVER 100 street vendors. This year, expect more food options than ever - BBQ, tacos, empanadas, bao buns, wraps, wings, lobster rolls, mac and cheese, burgers, craft beverages, cakes, pies, Italian ice, and more! There will be two stages featuring live music from The Blue Chips, Harmony Road, and Dos Belos. Games and activities will include face painting, sand art, a piñata bash, a pie eating contest, and interactive tours of Village fire trucks and construction vehicles. Community volunteer groups and service organizations will also be present to hand out information about their organizations and upcoming events.

We hope to see you at this year's Summerfest!

Annual Memorial Day Ceremony

The American Legion Fox-Eklof Post 505 held a Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Corner to remember those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice. Veteran and Post Commander William Tuttle led the ceremony. Veteran and CFD Deputy Chief Thomas “Tex” Dinkler, pictured here, read the names of Croton servicemembers killed in action. We honor and remember those fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our nation.

ShopRite of Croton presented a $5,000 check from their veterans campaign to the Fox-Eklof American Legion Post 505 at a May 26th presentation attended by Village Trustee Ann Gallelli, Trustee Len Simon, and Village Manager Bryan Healy.

2023 Veteran's Banner Program

The Village of Croton-on-Hudson is honored to announce the start of the 2023 Veteran's Banner Program. 48 banners recognizing local veterans are now displayed throughout the Village. A locater list will be published on social media page and the Village website.

At the end of the display period (from Memorial Day to Veterans Day), sponsors will have the option to display the banner again next year or the banner will be returned to the sponsor/family as a “Thank You” from our community.

The Lorraine Hansberry Coalition, with support from the Village of Croton-on-Hudson, has organized a two-week, four-event 60th anniversary commemoration of “The Rally in Support of the Southern Freedom Movement,” which acclaimed playwright and activist Lorraine Hansberry chaired at Temple Israel of Northern Westchester in her hometown of Croton-on-Hudson.

The series will include a family-friendly rally and Kickoff Event at Temple Israel on June 11, with children’s programming for ages 4 to 10; a community discussion, Voting Rights 2023, at the Yacht Club on June 14; a photography exhibit and book-signing with William Abranowicz at the Black Cow on June 15; and a moderated special screening of “Mississippi: Is This America?” at the Croton Free Library on June 24. The events will connect participants to significant local civil rights history as they explore the importance of equality and voting rights in the 1960s and today. The events are free, but registration is required. For more information and to register, go to https://tinyurl.com/LHCevent on Eventbrite.

Croton-on-Hudson to Host Great Loop Paddlers During Historic Canoe Journey

Ten paddlers representing the Haudenosaunee nations will make a stop at Croton-on-Hudson during their 1,500-mile canoe journey from Old Town, Maine to New York Harbor, known as the 'Great Loop'. The effort, which is being documented by National Geographic, is intended to raise awareness of Indigenous relationships with local waters and the importance of environmental conservation. The group, led by Hickory Edwards, founder of the Onondaga Canoe and Kayak Club and member of the Onondaga Nation Turtle Clan, is expected to land at Senasqua Park on June 17th between 5:30 and 7:30 PM, where they will be welcomed by residents and engage in a conversation about their historic journey. They will set out again in the morning to continue their upriver travel to Stony Point. The paddlers can be tracked in real time on Caltopo.

Village-Wide Speed Limited Lowered to 25 MPH

Following the enactment of a new state law, Croton-on-Hudson has lowered the Village-wide speed limit from 30 MPH to 25 MPH in order to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The change was supported by the Village's Bicycle-Pedestrian Committee and a detailed Traffic Engineering Study. While this change applies to most roadways in the Village, some will retain their 30 MPH speed limits, including Maple Street, Municipal Place, South Riverside Avenue and Croton Point Avenue. Please adhere to all posted speed limits and drive safely!

From the Department of Public Works

The Department of Public Works recently repurposed wood from the Village's fallen Merwin Oak Tree to create a beautiful handcrafted bench. The project was done entirely in house by Mike Esposito, Brian Senno, and Luciano Ponce Ponce. The bench will make its public debut at Summerfest, where it will be on display at the DPW tent. The Department's work will preserve the memory of the Merwin Oak for years to come!
